Year 2025 In Review For Latin America And The Caribbean

2025 saw progressive governments in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) delegitimized and displaced. Right-wing forces have seized on drug-related crises to attack the so-called Pink Tide governments, driving a reactionary backwash and putting new, neoliberal administrations in power. The irony is that the rise in drug use and crime is driven by neoliberalism’s failure to meet social needs. But this has been successfully cloaked. A further irony is that governments with the strongest records in limiting the social damage caused by illegal narcotics have been the principal targets of US destabilization campaigns.

US Airstrike In Nigeria Confirms Why AFRICOM Must Be Shut Down

If it was not clear before the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) Christmas Day bombing of its Sokoto state, that Nigeria is not a sovereign African nation but is instead a neo-colonial state with a Western puppet government, it should be crystal clear now. The longstanding fundamental crisis of the sovereignty of African nations lies in the continuity of its neo-colonial structures, with the unrestrained operation of AFRICOM as a graphic example of that dependency. The Black Alliance for Peace’s (BAP) Africa Team and U.S. Out of Africa Network (USOAN) unequivocally condemn this veiled act of aggression in the strongest terms.

A Moment Of Hope In Gaza

On Thursday, December 25th, 2025, during Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians, 168 students graduated from medical school, in Gaza. Wearing their white coats, they stood in front of the ruined façade of what was formerly Gaza’s largest hospital, the Al-Shifa Medical Complex. As a backdrop, the destroyed building realistically conveys perils the graduates faced while earning their medical degrees. Throughout the last two years of their studies, they risked assassination, injury, arrest, imprisonment, and torture, as well as attacks on their own family members.

Israel Suspends Dozens Of Major Aid Groups Operating In Gaza

Israel has announced the suspension of over three dozen humanitarian groups working in Gaza, citing their failure to meet new requirements demanding that the organizations hand over the personal details of staff members. The list includes some of the most prominent international groups such as Doctors Without Borders, Action Aid, and Defense for Children International. "The message is clear: humanitarian assistance is welcome – the exploitation of humanitarian frameworks for terrorism is not," said Israeli Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli. The new requirements were announced earlier in 2025.

US Alleges Unverified Land Strikes In Venezuela Amid Rising Civilian Deaths

On Monday, the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced a new extrajudicial execution as part of its Operation Southern Spear, killing two civilians in a small boat in Eastern Pacific waters. In addition, since Sunday, US President Donald Trump has claimed that the US carried out land strikes on Venezuelan territory; however, the US regime has not provided evidence of these attacks. The US publicized its latest assassinations in the manner that has now become familiar: US SOUTHCOM announced on social media that a new round of executions of defenseless Latin American civilians had been carried out in the waters of the Eastern Pacific ocean.

Strangulation, Not Invasion: Trump’s Plan For Venezuela

The loudest question in Washington right now is whether Donald Trump is going to invade Venezuela. The quieter, and far more dangerous, reality is this: He probably won’t. Not because he cares about Venezuelan lives, but because he has found a strategy that is cheaper, less politically risky at home, and infinitely more devastating: economic warfare. Venezuela has already survived years of economic warfare. Despite two decades of sweeping U.S. sanctions designed to strangle its economy, the country has found ways to adapt: Oil has moved through alternative markets; communities have developed survival strategies; people have endured shortages and hardship with creativity and resilience.

Keeping Power Utilities In Corporate Hands Doesn’t Make Sense

All over the country, Americans are struggling to pay their utility bills. In the Hudson Valley, the situation is particularly dire, with some ratepayers coping with surprise monthly bills of thousands of dollars. It doesn’t have to be that way, according to the region’s democratic socialists, who are leading a fight to lower prices. A bill introduced by Sarahana Shrestha, a democratic socialist assemblywoman in Assembly District 103 in the Mid-Hudson Valley, and her state senate colleague, Michelle Hinchey, calls for a state takeover of the utility company serving the area.

Denver Anti-War Protests Target New Palantir Headquarters

Denver, CO – On December 21, protesters gathered at the Cherry Creek Financial House in Denver for a noise rally to protest at the new headquarters of Palantir. The tech and AI surveillance company has plans to move into the new Cherry Creek location after months of community organizing have made their downtown headquarters untenable. Palantir, whose technology is widely used by ICE to track immigrants and by Israel to facilitate genocide in Gaza, was invited to place its headquarters in Denver by Colorado Governor Jared Polis, after protests drove them out of California in 2020.

This Year In Labour: Workers Fight Back Despite Instability And Hardship

For workers and their families in Canada, the year has been rough. About one in five Canadians experience high financial pressure, according to data collected by the Angus Reid Institute. This financial pressure is driven by relatively high job insecurity, difficulty putting food on the table and higher debt levels. Many of these families are bracing for even more financial hardship in the new year, with 60 per cent expecting an increased level of difficulty in 2026. Thousands of Canadians are losing their jobs amid U.S. president Donald Trump’s tariffs and Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cuts to the public service.

Forging A Stronger Farmers’ Movement In Tanzania

Over 670 farmers gathered in Morogoro, Tanzania, on December 4-5 to chart a course for the future of MVIWATA (National Network of Farmers Groups in Tanzania), one of Africa’s most unique farmers’ organizations. The occasion was MVIWATA’s 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM), which serves as the highest democratic platform for members to voice their aspirations for the organization’s future. As the powerful slogan, “Mviwata, Sauti ya Mkulima” (MVIWATA is the voice of the farmer) and “Mtetezi wa Mkulima, Mkulima Mwenyewe” (The defender of the farmer is the farmer), rang through the hall time and again, the farmers debated and arrived at conclusions on strengthening their networks in concrete ways.

Decline And Fall

At the start of the 20th century, the British Empire was, like our own, in terminal decline. Sixty percent of Englishmen were physically unfit for military service, as are 77 percent of American youth. The Liberal Party, like the Democratic Party, while it acknowledged the need for reform, did little to address the economic and social inequalities that saw the working class condemned to live in substandard housing, breathe polluted air, be denied basic sanitation and health care and forced to work in punishing and poorly paid jobs.

Trump Canceled Temporary Legal Status For More Than 1.5M Immigrants

Washington — Since Inauguration Day, more than 1.5 million immigrants have either lost or will lose their temporary legal status, including their work authorizations and deportation protections, due to President Donald Trump’s aggressive revocation of legal immigration. It’s the most rapid loss in legal status for immigrants in recent United States history, experts in immigration policy told States Newsroom. The Trump administration curtailed legal immigration by terminating Temporary Protected Status for more than 1 million immigrants and ending Humanitarian Parole protections for half a million more individuals.

China Imposes Sanctions On Dozens Of US Weapons Manufactures

On Friday, December 26, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced sanctions against US weapons manufacturing firms and their high-level officials over Washington’s decision to allow billions of dollars of arms sales to Taiwan. The 20 weapons manufacturing firms sanctioned by China include companies like Northrop Grumman Corporation, L3Harris Maritime Services, and Boeing. At least 10 senior executives related to these firms, including Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril Industries, have also been sanctioned. The sanctions freeze all the movable and unmovable properties in China belonging to these firms and individuals.

Hunger Strike Supporters Hit Labour Headquarters

According to the media distributor, the Aftershock, a group calling itself ‘Justice for the Hunger Strikers’ has targeted Labour’s HQ in London. As we reported on 27 December, hunger striker Teuta Hoxha has lost the ability to stand, meanwhile Heba Muraisi, is losing the ability to speak. The hunger strikers have endured 18 months in prison without trial. As a consequence of this and other instances of alleged mistreatment, they recently launched legal action against justice secretary David Lammy. Notably, these activists were imprisoned before the government proscribed Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.

Bolivia: General Strike Led By Miners’ Union Continues

An indefinite general strike called by the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB) has now entered its second week. The strike has been in response to Supreme Decree 5503, a law condemned by unions and peasant organizations for being part of an “IMF-imposed adjustment” that is deteriorating the standard of living of the working population. Miners have been at the forefront of these protests. Since last Monday, December 22, thousands of miners have been marching on La Paz. Wearing helmets and carrying tools, they have set up roadblocks and blockades around Plaza Murillo, the central square of the national government.
