Gangster Capitalism And Corruption In Trump’s America

Corruption has never been far from the center of American politics. Some of the most notorious scandals stretch from the cronyism of Warren G. Harding to the abuses of power exposed during the Watergate scandal under Richard Nixon. Yet many historians argue that what distinguishes Donald Trump from earlier corrupt presidencies is that corruption no longer operates behind closed doors, shielded by the liberal rituals of institutional legitimacy and the euphemisms of political decorum. Under Trump, corruption is performed openly as spectacle, celebrated as a sign of strength, wealth, vengeance, and personal loyalty.

A Nation Of Suspects

Some of the recent legal challenges to the use of surveillance by the Department of Homeland Security upon Americans have resulted in the revelation of truly terrifying behavior by the government, in direct defiance of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. We now know that the federal government spies on innocent Americans without suspicion and without warrants. The spying seems to fall into several categories. The National Security Agency, which is in the Department of Defense, employs about 60,000 domestic spies.

A Call For Life In The Face Of The Drums Of War

To leaders of social organizations, human rights defenders, and citizens of the world: We address you at a time of extreme gravity. The escalation of aggressive rhetoric and threats of military intervention by extremist sectors in the United States against Cuba have ceased to be mere political slogans and have become a real danger that threatens the peace of the region and the lives of millions of human beings. We turn to the international civil society not to ask for favors, but to appeal to your justice and memory. Cuba is a small nation that has made solidarity its highest banner. While others export weapons, Cuba has exported life.

US Imposes Fresh Sanctions On Iran

The US imposed fresh sanctions on Iran on Thursday, May 28, despite the ongoing peace talks in Qatar to end the war and hostilities which, if successful, will lead to the possible lifting of all previous sanctions. It “is sanctioning numerous entities, individuals, and vessels that form the backbone of Iran’s illicit oil economy, directly targeting the financial lifeline of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s military apparatus,” the US State Department said in a statement on Thursday. The sanction targeted several Iranian cargo ships involved in the transportation of petroleum products and over a dozen Iranian entities based in different parts of the world, including Hong Kong, Dubai, and Singapore, along with certain individuals involved in the export of petroleum products.

AIPAC ‘Hides’ Support For Democratic Candidates

The pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC has begun hiding its involvement in funding political campaigns for candidates running for public office in the US, as support for Israel becomes increasingly toxic among Democratic voters, Haaretz reported on 31 May. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has traditionally boasted of its success in helping elect candidates for Congress and the Senate who are committed to supporting Israel, including voting to provide it billions in US military aid each year. However, as Israel continues to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and wage war on Lebanon and Iran, US voters are beginning to view Israel and its lobby in the US in an increasingly negative light.

Arms Embargo Now! GKN Out Of Garden Grove!

On Thursday, May 21, a 34,000-gallon storage tank carrying a highly toxic and flammable chemical, methyl methacrylate, overheated at the GKN Aerospace facility in the middle of a predominantly working-class Garden Grove neighborhood. The overheating tank released toxic chemicals into the air, creating a serious risk of explosion and forcing over 50,000 residents to evacuate. GKN Aerospace’s chemical crisis has resulted in evacuations in Garden Grove, Stanton, Westminster, Cypress, and Buena Park, forced dozens of school closures, and disrupted hundreds of businesses.

Around 500 People Are On Hunger Strike At Five ICE Detention Centers

It started with one man at the Torrance County Detention Facility in New Mexico; a Cuban immigrant named Rogelio Bolufe, who has been in ICE detention since last August. Around April 28, he raised concerns about conditions at the facility and has since gone on hunger strike. Bolufe mobilized dozens of fellow detainees to protest about legal library access, water quality, tablets, and what he alleges were constitutional abuses. Bolufe says that on May 5, he was removed from his cell and transferred to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency's field office in Albuquerque, then transferred to Camp East Montana in Fort Bliss, Texas, then to Alabama, then to Mesa, Arizona, and lastly to a detention facility in Washington.

‘We Demand Freedom’: Immigrants On Strike In New Jersey Prison

On a patch of sidewalk on a busy industrial corridor in Newark, federal agents with rifles, metal batons, flak vests, and balaclavas faced off against unarmed activists with cardboard signs and a bullhorn. Detained workers could be heard on the soccer field behind the prison walls, shouting in Spanish: “¡Libertad!” (Freedom!) Since May 22, 300 of them are on a work stoppage and hunger strike. Over video chat, one worker told the crowd outside that they had stopped eating and working for as little as $1 an hour (or no pay at all) to demand an improvement in their living conditions.

Protesters Bring ‘Conejo’ Hats And Sanctuary State Demands To Governor

Saint Paul, MN – On Wednesday, May 27, the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC) brought its demands for a sanctuary state executive order to the office of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, along with dozens of blue bunny hats that they left on the floor outside of his office. MIRAC has been calling on Governor Walz to issue an executive order making Minnesota a sanctuary state and on all gubernatorial candidates to commit to implementing statewide sanctuary policies. With no response from Walz, the group took their demands to his office in person.

Disability Rights At Risk: Seven States Back Case Attacking Protections

The right of disabled people to live in community rather than being warehoused in institutions is under attack in a lawsuit currently being pursued by Texas and six other states. But advocacy efforts are persuading states to pull out of the suit against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Secretary of HHS Robert F. Kennedy Jr., called Texas v. Kennedy. Two state plaintiffs withdrew from the case in May after hearing concerns from the disability community, bringing the number of remaining state plaintiffs to only seven in an amended case that began with seventeen.

Green Shoots Of Hope In The Labor Movement

Gardeners have a saying about newly planted perennials: “They sleep, then creep, then leap.” Last summer I pulled a lot of grass out of my yard (hard work!) and planted a garden. The new plants stayed small through the winter, gathering strength. Now suddenly my garden is teeming with new leaves. Spring has brought green shoots in the labor movement too. Here are some causes for hope: Workers using their leverage. It only took three days for strikers on the Long Island Railroad, which carries 300,000 commuters a day, to win needed raises. “Solidarity Forever” still has it right: Without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn.

Israel Delegitimized Itself With Its Attacks On The Flotilla

It began as a human rights mission: over 600 civilians on 72 boats from more than 45 countries, seeking to break Israel’s 19-year siege of Gaza. It ended with two Israeli-government assaults in international waters, including kidnappings, beatings, torture, sexual abuse, and violations of international law. And crucially, it ended with Israel losing legitimacy, not just with the public but also among its own allies on a scale not seen since South Africa lost its own legitimacy in the Apartheid era. On April 29, Israeli commandos boarded 22 boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla 80 nautical miles from Greece.

Iran Expresses ‘Total Solidarity’ With Oman

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi vowed “solidarity” and support for the Sultanate of Oman on 29 May, after US President Donald Trump threatened to bomb the Gulf country if it teams up with Tehran to manage the Strait of Hormuz. The comments came during a phone call between Araghchi and Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidy. “In very productive call with Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidy, I expressed Iran's solidarity with Oman in face of any threat,” Araghchi said in a statement on X. “We discussed Hormuz and its future administration in line with our sovereign responsibilities and international law. We welcome consultation with all neighboring states,” he added.

The Clean Energy Transition’s Indigenous Sacrifice Zones

It has become abundantly clear that the clean energy transition is “business as usual” for Indigenous Peoples. At least a dozen major cases have emerged where Indigenous rights are being overtly dismissed in order to secure supplies of lithium, nickel, copper, cobalt and other strategic minerals. The unprecedented demand is reshaping landscapes and economies across the globe. New mines, processing facilities, transmission corridors and renewable energy projects are being fast-tracked, often with promises of sustainable development and a greener, more ‘just’ future.

Loved Ones, Supporters Of Striking Immigrants Rally Around The Clock

More than 300 people detained inside Newark, New Jersey’s Delaney Hall detention center are on a work and hunger strike, demanding that Gov. Mikie Sherrill visit the facility and meet with them. For months, immigrants detained inside the facility have drawn attention to Delaney’s inhumane conditions. They officially launched their strike on May 22, 2026, calling for freedom for everyone detained in the facility and especially the immediate release of vulnerable people, including children, the elderly, and those with serious medical conditions.
