Four days ago, on the 24th of June, a national holiday jointly celebrating St. John the Baptist Day and the key Battle of Carabobo that secured the nation’s Independence, Venezuela was struck by twin earthquakes, 39 seconds from each other, one of 7.2 on the Richter scale and the second of greater intensity, of 7.5. The fault lines run through the northwestern valley of the capital Caracas and all along the coast, north of Caracas past the mountains. There was also damage in areas of the interior of the country. Experts call it a doublet. The devastation was unbelievable. Nothing like this has ever happened in South America and it was the strongest earthquake to hit Venezuela in over a century.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari announced on 30 June that no direct high-level sessions between US and Iranian officials are scheduled in Doha on Tuesday, following the arrival of US special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner were traveling to Doha for “high-level meetings” concerning the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran, however Ansari clarified the delegation would meet with Qatari mediators rather than Iranian representatives.

The Hind Rajab Foundation has called on the U.S. to investigate Israel’s far right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for war crimes ahead of his visit to New York City in early July. On Saturday, the Belgium-based foundation filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice, stating that the U.S. has the jurisdiction and the legal obligation to investigate, arrest, and prosecute Ben-Gvir during his visit to New York City. Ben-Gvir is set to attend the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit on July 7 and 8 in the city. Ben-Gvir must be prosecuted for his involvement in war crimes, the foundation stated, including crimes against U.S. nationals.

Down a dirt road in northwest Oklahoma, only a few hundred yards from where the city of Enid draws its drinking water, a company injects the toxic byproduct of oil production deep underground. That close proximity violates a state rule meant to protect public groundwater supplies from oil field wastewater, which can be saltier than the sea and laden with toxic metals. Injection operations are banned within a half-mile of public water wells unless regulators hold a hearing to ensure that such activity will not pollute the water.

Yassin owns a roadside rest stop next to Qaraoun Dam, a cornerstone of Lebanon’s water and energy infrastructure. On May 26, Israeli airstrikes hit targets perilously close to the dam, tearing apart adjacent access roads and scattering debris into Lake Qaraoun. Shrapnel hit Yassin’s property, which sits just 200 meters from the dam. “It was a brutal moment. The ground shook under our feet, then the place filled with dust and smoke,” said Yassin, who recalled scrambling to check if everyone was safe.

Yemeni tribes nationwide are mobilizing en masse to prepare for renewed conflict with the Saudi-led coalition, following a call from the Ansarallah leader for the “expulsion of occupiers.” Multiple local reports on 29 June and statements from officials confirmed widespread popular movements and mobilization across Yemen. SABA reported that a “massive armed gathering was organized on Monday by tribes of Al-Mansouriya district in Hodeidah to declare the full mobilization and complete readiness [for a battle] to reclaim the rights of Yemenis.”
