The Iranian army said in a statement that it targeted a US base in the UAE after Washington’s deadly strikes hit Larak Island. “Early Monday morning, in response to the recent aggression by the [US] enemy, and in retaliation for the martyrdom of the brave personnel of the IRGC and innocent Iranian compatriots on Larak Island, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army targeted the locations of the helicopters and forces of the child-killing US military at the Al-Minhad Base in the UAE.”

Shortly before his death, Herbert Marcuse wrote an essay on Rudolf Bahro’s book The Alternative in Eastern Europe. In the essay, Marcuse hailed Bahro’s “critique of actually existing socialism” as “the most important contribution to Marxist theory and practice in decades.” This statement was part of a coordinated campaign for the book and for Bahro that swept through the major media outlets of the Western world between 1977 and 1979–80. As we now know (or can know), a striking number of the key figures in this campaign maintained connections in the postwar decades to the Central Intelligence Agency or to various institutions and organizations that were either controlled, funded, or considered “friendly” by the CIA or the U.S. State Department.

The protest also highlights a campaign of racism and criminalization that, according to Garifuna organizations, seeks to legitimize the dispossession of their ancestral territories.

President Donald Trump and his allies in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Justice Department have targeted the First Amendment-protected expression of protesters, civil society groups, journalists, universities, and the lawyers representing them at a scale that has “not been seen since the Second Red Scare,” according to an amicus brief filed with a federal court in Minnesota on August 25 by Protect Democracy and other groups.
