Venezuela’s Battle For Sovereignty Continues

Underneath the appearance of “normalcy” in the ongoing relationship between Venezuela and the US lies a manifest asymmetry of power. Even commentators from mainstream international news outlets frame their analyses by drawing attention to the proverbial US gun held to acting President Delcy Rodríguez’s head and, by implication, to the whole Chavista movement. That movement, founded by Hugo Chávez and carried forward by Nicolás Maduro, has broadly united behind her. The US attack of January 3 killed over 100 persons and succeeded in kidnapping President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, an elected member of the National Assembly.

I Am Making Up For The Years In A Government That Did Harm

Honolulu, 29 September. When Bike for Peace landed in Hawaiʻi on Tuesday, retired Colonel Ann Wright was  waiting at the airport with leis. Over dinner the same evening, Tore Nærland put her in the interview chair.  Ann Wright served as an officer in the United States Army and then for sixteen years as a diplomat in the  State Department. In March 2003 she was one of three American diplomats who resigned in protest before the  Iraq war began.  “I thought the pending war in Iraq was one of the stupidest things that I ever heard of. It had nothing to do  with 9/11. They didn’t have weapons of mass destruction,” she said.

Eleven Judges Call For Supreme Court To Protect Oak Flat

The Ninth Circuit today declined to rehear three lawsuits seeking to protect Oak Flat. While this is disappointing news, we are heartened that eleven judges joined opinions criticizing the court’s decision as a “tragic error” and calling for the Supreme Court to step in. Thus, the fight to protect Oak Flat is far from over. It is coming again to the Supreme Court. Judge Graber, writing on behalf of ten judges, put it simply: “We were wrong.” She said “everyone knew that this second round of litigation was inevitable,” and the courts should act now: “This is our last chance to prevent the irreversible desecration of a place, of a religion, and of a people.”

Southern Reckoning With Medical Myth Of Race As A Diagnostic Tool

Throughout my early medical education in the Deep South, race was ever-present, shaping the way we were taught to diagnose, treat, and even perceive human beings. It wasn't just a footnote; it was the lead. At medical schools across the country, we were trained to introduce patients starting with their race: "An 82-year-old Black female presents with…" as if the race descriptor was a biological diagnostic tool in itself. Our lecture slides often oversimplified the complexity of human life into neat, racialized boxes. Clinical "risk factors" were organized by skin color, and certain diseases were described as if they only belonged to specific groups.

Israel Bombs Newly Built Water Desalination Plant In Gaza

Gaza, Palestine — For nearly two months, Palestinians in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood had access to water at any time — a welcome sense of stability in the depths of a genocidal war. On Aug. 24, that stability was disrupted by an Israeli airstrike that destroyed the newly built water desalination plant and damaged apartment buildings and tents. Standing next to rubble and forcibly displaced from the airstrikes, Louay Al-Namnam told Unicorn Riot that at least 14 Palestinian families were now looking for “somewhere to live.”

A Political-Economic Prequel Of Decolonial Ecological Accounting

Decolonial accounting systems could have been imagined twenty years ago, but they would have been much more difficult to implement. The problem was not a shortage of alternative indicators. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, accounting methodologies had become institutionalized through national statistical systems, international financial institutions, development agencies, auditing standards, environmental certification programs, and private financial infrastructure. These institutions had acquired considerable authority to determine what counted as productive, measurable, and valuable.

IRGC Announces ‘Daily Strikes’ On Violating Ships In Hormuz

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in comments released on 30 September that it carries out “daily” strikes on vessels violating its regulations in the Strait of Hormuz, and that the US “has not been responding.” “We have been hitting small ships and preventing them from passing for a long time, but America does not respond,” said IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi. “There is a military confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz every 24 hours. For some time now, the US has not been responding,” he added.

Movement For Release Of Former PM Imran Khan Heats Up

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the country’s main opposition party, announced a long march to the capital, Islamabad, on Sunday, October 4, as part of its ongoing nationwide movement to demand the release of its leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The march, which was originally scheduled to be held on Sunday, September 27, starting from Peshawar, was postponed on Friday after the party’s top leadership decided it needed more time to mobilize to face the state’s preparations to block it. Thousands of people have been taking to the streets in different parts of the country demanding the immediate release of Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other party leaders.

Congressional Black Caucus: When Black Excellence Is Not Black Power

I am still unpacking from the Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual Legislative Conference, literally and figuratively… I went to “CBC Weekend” for the first time when I was 26 or 27. I didn’t even know that they had panels during the day. I rolled to DC, hair done and dressed to the nines to party hop and see who I could meet. With my Ph.D. imminent, I thought I wanted to make inroads into what is now known as “Black excellence.” I have vague memories of Coach purses, Nordstrom’s outfits, Moet champagne sips, and a few laughs with old Howard friends, not a single date or networking contact of note, but I was there.

Unions, Farmers Demand ‘Fair Trade For Working Families’ At G20

Milwaukee, Wis. — Union members, farmers and other Wisconsinites gathered near the site where the Trump administration is hosting the G20 Trade Ministerial today for a “Fair Trade for Working Families” demonstration expressing anger over broken trade promises and calling on the Trump administration and other officials to adopt fair trade policies that prioritize the interests of working people. “Like many places, Milwaukee is still suffering from the devastating economic impacts of deindustrialization and the ongoing race-to-the-bottom caused by corporate-driven trade deals that offshore jobs and drive down wages,” said Pam Fendt, President of the Milwaukee Area Labor Council.

We Mapped All 11,000 Factory Farms In Iowa

Iowa is the U.S. state with the most factory farms: 10,830 of them, to be exact. The massive scale of animal agriculture in Iowa produces staggering amounts of manure, more than its fields of corn, soy and other crops can absorb.  This has a devastating effect on the state’s water. When too much manure is spread on fields, nitrates run off into the groundwater and nearby streams and lakes.  Small towns in Iowa can face months-long stretches when their water is undrinkable. Des Moines, the state capitol and largest city, operates a massive system to remove nitrate pollution from its water to the tune of $10,000 a day, the largest such system in the world when it was built.

Biggest Lesson From Xi-Trump Summit Is Not What You Think

Most mainstream observers of the Xi-Trump Summit focused entirely on deliverable outcomes. Would the summit be a step toward improved US-China trade ties? Would it produce a breakthrough between the US and China on issues such as tariffs, high-technology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)? These questions are reasonable ones to ask given that the US and China are the two biggest economies in the world. However, they miss the biggest lesson of all from Xi and Trump’s exchange. The biggest take away from the summit is that it is now impossible to ignore what Xi Jinping told Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of their summit in Moscow in 2023.

Snippets From IRGC’s Open Letter To American People

Released seven months into the US-Israeli war of aggression, the letter exposes the catastrophic strategic failures of the American war machine and the hypocrisy of Washington’s "Empire of Lies." It highlights the profound resilience of the Iranian nation following the cowardly assassination of the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and the massacre of 168 schoolchildren in Minab. Drawing on Islamic theology, historical grievances, and contemporary geopolitical realities, the IRGC outlines how Iran achieved a decisive victory with merely one percent of the US defense budget.

US Military Withdraws From Iraq After Two Decades

The US military has completely withdrawn from Iraq, DPA reported on 27 September, citing an Iraqi government official. All US combat troops and logistical support forces have left the country, the official told the German news agency on Sunday.   The US military has not confirmed the report. Iraq and the US agreed to withdraw the remaining 2,500 US military personnel in 2024. Before the withdrawal, US forces had reduced their presence in Iraq, which first began with the illegal invasion of the country ordered by former president George Bush in 2003.

Integrity In Media Is Possible

In the formal rooms of the University Club of Chicago the loudest applause was not reserved for celebrity. It was reserved for refusal. The refusal to accept an official story merely because it was official and trade editorial independence for access; refusal for leaving wrongdoing concealed because disclosure might end a career and invite prosecution or fracture and upend a life. The second annual Integrity Media Independent Journalism Awards on Sept. 17 brought journalists, publishers, lawyers, supporters, and whistleblowers into the same room and treated their work not as separate pursuits, but as parts of a shared democratic undertaking against autocracy and authoritarianism.
