Berlin Startup Offers €1m To Save Ancient Hambach Forest From Coal Mining

Ecosia offers to buy remaining forest from energy firm RWE, which plans to fell most of the trees. A non-profit Berlin tech startup has offered to buy the remaining 200 hectares of an ancient German forest to save it from being destroyed for coal surface mining. Ecosia, a search engine which donates the majority of its advertising revenue to conservation initiatives and funded the planting of almost 40m trees across the world, has approached the energy firm RWE with an offer of €1m (£877,000) to secure the final stretch of the 12,000-year-old Hambach forest in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia. “We think that a fair reconciliation of interests can be found between RWE and the people, and with our commitment to buy the remaining stretch...

Solidarity With Amazing Resistance To Destruction Of Hambacher Forest

The Hambach Forest, which one could call the last “primeval” forest in Central Europe, is being stubbed for Europe’s biggest climate pollutant – the Rhenish lignite mining area of RWE (Rheinisches Braunkohlerevier), in which RWE mines brown coal. Whole villages and the health of human beings are destroyed in this process. To prevent all of this people squatted the Hambacher Forest and take part in other effective and direct Actions. Join us!

Support Jus, Hambach Forest Defender On Hunger Strike In Jail

By Hambach Forest in Earth First Journal - One person remains in custody after our last remaining living tower barricade, an essential tool for peaceful resistance against deforestation and climate collapse, was evicted. Our living tower barricade, which was situated at the entrance to the Hambach Forest, was named Rémi’s Tower in memory of Rémi Fraisse, bringing attention to the increasing deaths and oppression of Earth defenders. A UK-based group Global Witness reported that at least 116 environmental activists died last year while campaigning against mining, logging, water and land grabs. The amount of oppression, incarceration and deaths is rising. On July 22nd at around 8am, as the eviction of Rémi’s Tower began, Jus was the only activist occupying the tower.

Call For Reoccupation Of The Hambach Forest On April 26

“After the eviction of the third occupation in the Hambach Forest near Köln, which took place on March 27th after nearly 7 months…We had to suffer massive Repression, especially the last time: the raid on the meadow occupation and two other projects, confiscation of all our electronic devices as well as private stuff and scripts. This proves one thing: Our direct protest against the exploitation and the destruction of nature by RWE is effective. We will show that we‘re not afraid and we will not give up!” An one hour Interview about the Hambach Forest and the protest in the Rheinland against brown coak arised in the United States on the last sunday. It deals with basically informations as well as with current stuff – as example the raid and the eviction of the forest occupation.

Mass Protests Follow Eviction Of Occupied German Village

Thousands protested the planned expansion of an immense open-pit coal mine, one of the largest in Europe. The forceful eviction of climate activists who were occupying Lützerath for more than two years and the demolition of the village itself became a call to action, sparking the largest protest yet seen in the region. The sheer number of people, together with the presence of famed Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, attracted the attention of both local and international media, helping to broadcast climate activists’ searing criticism of the German government’s energy policy, which has used the war in Ukraine as an excuse to continue burning coal. The Garzweiler open-pit coal mine, operated by energy giant RWE, has expanded to consume around 15 villages since the 1960s.
