The United States has for example placed sanctions on U.N. special rapporteur Francesca Albanese for calling attention to Israeli atrocities in Gaza, justifying the move by claiming the human rights expert has “expressed support for terrorism”. In the U.K., police have been arresting people on terrorism charges just for holding signs which say “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action”.

State-sanctioned threats, bullying and xenophobia – from US government officials and publicized in the media – have gone wild and unchecked.

On 13 July 2026, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched the “Campaign to Dismantle the ICC’s Threat to American Sovereignty”. In an address, Mr. Rubio declared the ICC a “threat to American sovereignty”. He vowed that if foreign bureaucrats and judges try to deprive the US of its “birthright of independence”, “we will teach them the full meaning of American resolve.”

However, current FEMA officials in the Trump administration were notably absent from a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing on bipartisan legislation to reform the agency, despite broad support for the bill among Republicans.

During the July 15 hearing, Democrats slammed President Donald Trump for politicizing FEMA by denying federal disaster relief to blue states and diverting personnel and resources to bolster his deadly mass deportation campaign.

Flash flooding has been tearing up communities across the U.S., with heavy downpours sending creeks and rivers rushing over their banks from Texas to Kentucky, across the Midwest and into the Mid-Atlantic states and the Northeast.

Texas’ Hill Country was hit hard again when a powerful storm triggered flooding on the Guadalupe and other rivers on July 16, 2026, in the same region where more than 100 people, including young campers, died in flash flooding on July 4, 2025. In Missouri, floodwater swept away a home, and National Guard helicopters had to rescue and evacuate dozens of people from a summer camp.
