There is much to celebrate because we are already having an effect.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership process has been slowed – the bill to grant Fast Track to President Obama has not been introduced in Congress yet and TPP negotiators are struggling with the language in several chapters of the agreement. The initial goal of having the TPP signed by early October does not look achievable.

And the AFL-CIO passed a resolution opposing the TPP at its convention last week.

All of your hard work to shine a light on the TPP and to demand transparency and democracy is having an impact.

So you know what that means…  time to increase the pressure!

The text of the TPP must be made public so we know what is being negotiated and how it will affect our lives. There must be a democratic process in Congress which includes public hearings, testimony and amendments.

We are not looking for some vague language that protects people and the planet but is not enforced. We demand fair trade, not corporate trade!

There are many opportunities for you to take action:

1. Plan a teach-in on the TPP in your community.

Washington, DC Actions: 
Friday, Sept. 20 – Rally at the Office of the US Trade Representative while lead negotiators meet in secret. Starts at noon at 600 17th St., NW.

Stop Fast Track Action Camp, Sept. 21 and 22: Bill Moyer of the Backbone Campaign and Steph Cascadia of Rising Tide will guide us through a weekend of training in strategy, creative tactics and skills building. There is a role for everyone. Then we will put those new skills to good use with 2 days of high visibility actions in Washington, DC. Just Do ITSept. 21 – Movie and TPP Teach-in: See “Just Do It” – A tale of modern day outlaws and learn more about the plan to stop the TPP, Bus Boys and Poets, 5th and K Sts., NW, Washington, DC. Food and drink available for purchase. 8 to 10 pm.

Sept. 22 – TPP light projection: Join us to spread the TPP message around Washington after dark. Meet at First Trinity Lutheran Church at 7 pm, 309 E. St., NW.

Sept. 24 – Stop Fast Track March: Meet at Lafayette Park in front of the White House at 11 am. Wear comfortable shoes. We’ll take the Fast Track train for a spin around town and pass out literature on the way.TPP 1lights

Sept. 25 – Join the Fair Trade Brigade: We will pass out information to all members of the House about Fast Track. Then we will return to the halls of Congress every TPP Tuesday until the vote on Fast Track to monitor whether members are going to stand with the people or the corporations.
