Nations Launch Legal Action Against Israel At The Hague

Nine countries convene to address international law violations and support Palestinian rights.

Nine nations are set to meet today, January 31, 2025, in The Hague, Netherlands, launching The Hague Group with the goal of holding Israel accountable for its alleged violations of international law in the Gaza Strip. The nations aim to announce coordinated legal, economic, and diplomatic measures as part of their commitment to uphold Palestinian rights.

The historic meeting, convened by the Progressive International, will bring together representatives from Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal, and South Africa. Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla, co-general co-ordinator of the Progressive International, highlighted the need for collective action, stating, “The Hague Group is born of necessity. We must stand together to defend the principles of justice, equality, and human rights.”

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reinforced the group’s mission by pointing out the gravity of Israel’s actions, claiming, “Israel’s violations go beyond the mass murder and persecution of Palestinians; they strike at the very foundations of international law, which the global community has a duty to defend.”

The formation of The Hague Group reflects growing international concern over Israel’s military actions against Palestinians, particularly following reports of thousands of deaths, injuries, and the plight of children suffering from the conflict. Several of the participating nations have already taken significant steps to curtail relations with Israel. For example, Colombia recently suspended weapons purchases and diplomatic ties with Israel, and Belize and Bolivia have also severed diplomatic relations.

Malaysia has gone so far as to implement maritime bans on Israel-affiliated vessels, preventing them from docking at any Malaysian port, and Namibia blocked military shipments destined for Israel. These actions show rising discontent among global south nations and their willingness to act against perceived injustice.

The Hague, known as the City of Peace and Justice, was chosen not only for its symbolic significance but also for what it stands to represent – efforts to reinforce international law. It is home to the Peace Palace and the International Court of Justice, emphasizing the aspirations for a global order governed by law rather than force.

Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, expressed the group’s intentions clearly: “Our actions are not punitive – they are preventative, intended to protect the vulnerable.” His statement reflects the foundational ethical position of the Hague Group, which seeks to safeguard human rights without being seen as punitive.

The larger moral question remains at the forefront of this meeting. Many nations have voiced their obligation to act on behalf of those suffering from the violence and chaos resulting from the conflict. Namibia’s Minister of Justice, Yvonne Dausab, stated emphatically, “We can not be and must not be selective about protecting lives regardless of who the victims are; all lives matter, Palestinian lives matter.”

This international gathering at The Hague is expected to galvanize support for Palestine and solidify commitments to uphold international law. Participatory nations will explore ways to collectively respond to Israeli actions and support mechanisms such as the International Criminal Court, which faces increased threats amid rising tensions.

By addressing these challenges, The Hague Group intends to disrupt the systems allowing for human rights violations and hold perpetrators accountable. The outcomes of today’s meeting could set the stage for significant changes to how the international community collectively responds to Israel’s actions, and the prevailing discourse surrounding Palestinian rights.

Today marks not just another diplomatic meeting but potentially the dawn of progressively stringent measures against the violations of international law by state actors like Israel. The group hopes to deliver not only declarations but actions ensuring accountability and justice.
