Native American Slaves In New France

As many as 10,000 Indians were enslaved between 1660–1760. Here are the names we know.

Between 1660 and 1760, French colonists in New France enslaved as many as 10,000 Native Americans, forcing them to work as farm hands, domestic servants, and construction laborers. Enslaved Natives tended livestock, prepared meals, washed laundry, loaded trade goods into warehouses and onto boats, and cared for French children. Despite the trauma of their violent capture and forced transport into an alien culture, they found ways to survive: forming friendships, stealing private moments of solitude, making plans for a future when they would no longer be slaves. Most never saw that future. More than half died before the age of 20, and only a few successfully escaped or were freed. Surviving documents offer few details about their complex lives. For many, all that remains are names.

The animation below displays the names of more than 1,200 individuals enslaved in New France during this 100-year span. Each name appears at approximately the time he or she would have lived. Click on the names that appear in red for more information. Asterisks represent people we know were slaves but whose names have been lost.

Speaking/writing from the perspective of a Native American; keeping “Native Americans as slaves” was not new to any of the European invaders. Indeed, John Baylor the confederate governor of Texas and a Cavalry Officer of the Confederacy ordered his “Indian agents” to “Use all means to persuade the Apache or any other tribe to come in for the purpose of making peace and when you have them all together kill all of the grown Indians and sell the children to defray the expense of killing the adult Indians”————a direct reference to their market that was already existing for the selling of “Native American” (8) children as slaves. The Anglo European Invaders and their “bastard children” the Americans deserve little to no respect for their behavior THEN; and for their denial NOW.
Indeed as an author I have been quoted “If the USA were any other criminal nation the ‘Americans’ would invade the USA to keep the world safe; they would be justified.”
    * I encourage everyone to refrain from using the misnomer of “Indian” to describe Native Americans. Our DNA has now been proved (thus far) to have been in North America as far back as 14,000 years, is very distinctive; and has NO RELATION WHATSOEVER TO “INDIANS”—–WHO ACTUALLY ARE IN INDIA—-.

Some American Indians have told me they do not want to be called
‘Native Americans’ as that creates an excuse for White Americans to make such comments as -“I was born here, so I am a Native American too.”

I generally use the term-Native American Indian…which is long, but covers well.

  • kevinzeese

That’s right – best is Indigenous or Indigenous People’s.

  • Nylene13

    Indigenous North American Indian?
    Still too long.

  • Rev. Jake Harrison

When using the term “Indian” to describe Native Americans one is referring to Columbus who believed that he was in “India” and he called the inhabitants “Indians”. He was wrong of course and so is anyone (especially Native Americans) who use the term “Indian or American Indian” to describe themselves.
When some ignorant/arrogant “peckerwood American” says to me, “I was born here so I am a Native American also”; I laugh at them and remind them that they are of “Immigrant stock” and cannot be considered “Native American” and if they weren’t so ignorant they would know that fact.
“Indigenous” is the proper anthropological term, but again MOST AMERICANS ARE SO IGNORANT THAT THEY CANNOT UNDERSTAND ‘BIG WORDS’ LIKE THAT——–so what are YOU—ignorant? or Arrogant?————————

  • Rev. Jake Harrison

YOU seem to me to fall into the category of “ignorant/arrogant American”. You are not alone so try not to worry too much; sooner or later the world will have lost all tolerance for the USA and shortly after that their ignorance will cause them to self destruct.
As for me and my people, scientific and indisputable evidence reveals that we have been “here” for at least 14, 500 years; we will be here LONG after the Americans have killed themselves off.
“We” will not miss you when you are gone.

I think Indians /Native Americans -have the right to call themselves what ever they want.
Who made you God of the Dictionary?

  • kevinzeese

Please use the correct terminology, the term that the Indigenous I have talked to prefer — Indigenous and Indigenous Peoples.

  • Rev. Jake Harrison

YOU are correct (for once) “they” DO have the right to call themselves whatever they want; my assertion from the beginning was to “correct” yet one more ignorant American on the intelligent method to describe a race of people. You once more display the arrogance and ignorance that soooo many Americans seem to relish; which is a direct indication of the reason why the rest of the world fears and loathes—as well as LAUGHS at so many of you. “God of the dictionary”? Does your mom know you are using the computer?

You seem to have a lot of displaced anger-are you by chance ex-Military?
I say this because I have seen this before. I seriously suggest you get some good counseling.

  • Rev. Jake Harrison

Oh my gosh! I REALLY thought that YOU were a “kid/child”. Since you reveal NOW that PERHAPS, YOU ARE AN ADULT—-I do not have ANY displaced anger; and yes I was a Marine (1972-78) and college educated, ordained in the ministry, am also a pro se litigate in the Federal courts, as well as a businessman AND A PUBLISHED AUTHOR.
What you most likely detected was my deeply rooted intolerance for “Male Bovine Fecal Matter”—-aka “B.S.”—- and you seemed to me to be EITHER a child—–or as now revealed; an adult who was busy shoveling tons of that “MBFM”.
The question now is were you “using machinery” to move that much MBFM—–or just a spade?

    It’s only proper.
