NYT Admits That Its “Mountain of Evidence” For Russian Collusion Is Smaller Than A Molehill

The New York Times spends 10,000 words in some 199 paragraphs on the alleged ‘Russian influence’ in the U.S. election.

The Plot to Subvert an Election – Unraveling the Russia Story So Far

For two years, Americans have tried to absorb the details of the 2016 attack —hacked emails, social media fraud, suspected spies — and President Trump’s claims that it’s all a hoax. The Times explores what we know and what it means.

The long piece is a repetition of unproven intelligence claims, spin around a few facts and lots of innuendo. Few readers will ever digest it in full.

That is why this sentence appears near the top in paragraph 5 of a total of 199 paragraphs:

President Trump’s Twitter outbursts that it is all a “hoax” and a “witch hunt,” in the face of a mountain of evidence to the contrary, have taken a toll on public comprehension.

One-hundred-and-seventy-eight paragraphs later, near the end of the piece, we read the opposite and learn that Trump is indeed right:

Mr. Trump’s frustration with the Russian investigation is not surprising. He is right that no public evidence has emerged showing that his campaign conspired with Russia in the election interference or accepted Russian money.

The “mountain of evidence” claimed in paragraph 5 turns out to be “no public evidence” in paragraph 183 near the end of the piece. But 99% of the readers will not walk through the whole mess and the 1% that do will likely miss the contradiction.

As Aaron Maté notes:

This is a pattern: ample words for Trump-Russia innuendo; quiet acknowledgment of no evidence. And 0 words on what has been debunked.

The ‘Russian influence’ and ‘collusion’ between Russia and Trump are still what they were two years ago, when the campaign started – they are fake news. Unfortunately the anti-Russian and anti-Trump propaganda campaign has had serious consequences. Censorship in social media increased drastically and international relations with Russia were seriously damaged. The main stream media though, will never take responsibility for that.

There is a clear difference between no evidence and no PUBLIC evidence, and Mueller doesn’t leak evidence, which is why there is no PUBLIC evidence. Yes, we don’t know for sure, but with manafort, cohen, flynn, weisselberg, and others spilling everything they know, I have no doubt that there is a pile of evidence that russia and dump colluded and that dump has obstructed justice.

  • Joe Hill

Not to mention that his campaign manager, his deputy campaign manager and his national security are all now convicted felons and heading to prison for lying to the FBI about Russian contacts. Or that his son met with Russians who offered dirt on HRH HRC. Rob Goldstein wrote: ”

The Crown prosecutor of Russia met with his father Aras [a Moscow-based developer who tried to partner with Trump in a hotel project] this morning and in their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary [Clinton] and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.

This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr Trump – helped along by Aras and Emin.” Nothing fake about that — or a prison cell.

Of course the US would never think of meddling in the election of another country
(Or the political parties here would never self-select the candidate who would toe the line)

  • mwildfire

You have no doubt–that is, you have FAITH.

  • mwildfire

So what? That Trump has some kind of criminal connections in Russia is not evidence of serious election meddling–he likely also has things to hide in Italy, and Peru, and the Philippines. That someone offered him dirt they supposedly had on Clinton is also no big deal. He didn’t need it–she was the Democrats’ reason for losing the election, she carried more baggage into that race than United Airlines. Why HE won, with a scandal a week–many, many scandals that each should have been enough to knock him out of the race–I still really don’t understand. He appears to head one of the largest and most destructive cults to emerge in this country–the members of his cult are impervious to evidence or argument, and well into his second year in office after betraying those of his promises that would actually help his people, it hasn’t changed.

  • TecumsehUnfaced

Remember, Mueller helped cover up 9/11. He is as much a traitor to the American people as Donald Trump.

  • chetdude

“heading to prison for lying to the FBI about Russian contacts” <– Uh, no they aren't. They're headed for Camp Fed (the white collar country club) for typical, run of the mill, white collar capitalist crimes…

Nominating Hillary instead of Bernie brought us Trump…

  • Johnny Prescott

THANK you for this article! People believe what they believe because they read headlines and little else.

  • “I have no doubt that there is a pile of evidence that russia and dump colluded…”

    You were wrong. 🤣

  • kevinzeese

I have been waiting to see the “pile of evidence” for two years. All we have gotten is anti-Russia rhetoric that has led to an arms race, more bases for NATO and conflict we do not need between the two largest nuclear powers. We need the full Mueller investigaton released, but so far the evidence is sparse.

  • Wacanta

There is a 700 page pile of evidence that we haven’t seen yet, that was whittled down to a FOUR PAGE SUMMARY by the hack who wrote a 17 page letter seeking the AG job by telling dump that he knew he was innocent of everything. And if those 700 pages are good for dump, why haven’t they been released yet?

  • Wacanta

No, I wasn’t, unless you’ve read the full 700 pages and would care to fill me in on how they completely exonerate dump. I’ll wait.

  • kevinzeese

I look forward to seeing the full report. We want the Mueller report released. You may have to amend your statement that it is a pile of evidence supporting a Trump-Russia conspiracy. I have seen very little in Mueller actions that indicate he has a pile of Russiagate evidence.

  • Wacanta

And you may have to amend your statements. I never said there was a “conspiracy” (although I can’t see how there wasn’t), but there is (almost) certainly collusion and obstruction of justice. barr’s 4 page summary (in which he stated clearly that he was “summarizing”, only to a day later release another letter saying he never said the first was a summary) never quoted an entire sentence, and used only 73 words from an over 400+ page report. Now dump is saying he might not release the report, and barr intends to spend the next few weeks redacting whatever he feels is appropriate, which is NOT how innocent people behave and attempt to clear their name. dump is campaigning on the report “totally exonerating” him, barr is using delaying tactics, and by the time We the People get the full report, it will have been said repeatedly for a month or more that dump was completely exonerated by Mueller, and ameriKKKans who support dump, being as dumb as they are, will never be convinced otherwise.

  • There’s never enough evidence for the postmodernist loons. You believe, like the Christians.

The fact is you’re not competent to perform a better analysis than has already been performed by government. The media corporation lied, and you believed, like a sucker.
