Occupy The UN Climate Summit Starts Sunday

The Ad Hoc Committee to Occupy the Climate Summit announced plans at Zuccotti Park on S17 to occupy the UN beginning on Sunday. People can arrive during or after the People’s Climate March and the hope is to have people there 24/7 until the end of the UN climate meetings.

Between 46^th & 47^th Sts and 1^st and 2^nd Aves, across from U.N.

The Climate March is only the prelude

Throughout the day people will be leaving the March to assemble in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across the avenue from the U.N. While it is impossible to predict how events there will unfold, there will be a significant number who will attempt to occupy the plaza for the duration of the U.N. Climate Summit, which ends on Wednesday, September 24.

This action is not intended to compete with the messages of either the People’s Climate March on Sunday or the FLOOD WALL STREET action the following day, Monday.

Please feel free to join any two or all three. All three actions amplify a common message:

THE PEOPLE DEMAND ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE
AND ITS ROOT CAUSES

The UN represents the nations of the world.

Nations are not people. They are political constructs that reflect the interests of those who keep them in power. WE ARE PEOPLE.

We want our presence felt throughout the Summit. We want the world to see our resolve and understand our sense of urgency.

First, please do not get arrested on the 21st. The main stream media just loves to show videos of a few people getting arrested instead of masses of people coming together to make a statement. You say you do not want to compete, but if you clash with the police you will get the coverage. Of course if you clash with the police on Saturday that may bring more people on Sunday. Or if you clash with the police on Monday, that will keep the issue alive in the media. But a huge gathering like this should not be undercut by drawing attention to little groups.
Secondly, there very few people passing by Hammarksjold Plaza, and i’m sure people from the UN pay it no mind. Why not go where there are people to reach out to and grow the movement.

The people united will never be defeated. The people divided will be crushed.

My guess is that cops shut down Dag Hammarskjold Plaza before Sunday.

The people are being diverted from what, watching duck dynasty?
At my daughter’s high school everyone is excited about going to this thing. Do you think that they would be going to occupy the UN if not for this march? They would be going shopping. This is an opportunity to go recruit the marginally interested and teach them how important, fun and exciting saving the world can be. But you would rather sit in an empty little park on an empty giant avenue.
Come coopt the liberals and and enlighten their following.

I love Chris Hedges, but think he is wrong about this. And just like Occupy, you can read the signs if you want to know the demands.
Standing in front of buildings is not what makes change. A movement is made of people, so you have to attract people.
Go to the march and convince the people that they should be working on this every day.
