Update: Federal judge has put an hourly fine of $2,500 on Greenpeace for this action. The fine is set to increase daily if the protesters continue the action—on July 31 the sanction becomes $5,000 an hour, on Aug. 1 $7,500 an hour, and on Aug. 2 $10,000 an hour.  Common Dreams reports:

U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason agreed, stating (pdf) in her order: “Greenpeace, Inc. will remain in civil contempt so long as its activists continue to hang from the St. Johns Bridge in Portland, Oregon with the Fennica located upstream of that bridge.”

Judge Gleason agreed with Shell that the protest was violating a court ordered “buffer zone.”

Come to Portland NOW to join us in this victorious moment!

This morning the flotilla of Kayaktivists and 13 Greenpeace climbers turned around one of Shell’s Arctic destroying ships sending it back to port.

This is HUGE! We’re showing the strength of the global uprising that’s demanding Climate Justice for all.

This battle is NOT over. RIGHT NOW we need as many people to join the #sHellNO BLOCKADE, especially on the water and to also support on land.

STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND HEAD TO PORTLAND NOW! It could be only a matter of hours until they attempt to depart again. The courageous climbers and Kayaktivists need masses of people to form a moral shield defending them from the Coast Guard or Shell doing anything that would endanger their lives or safety.

We the People are standing up to Shell and big oil. It is time our so-called leaders do the same.

Shell RetreatsShell’s retreat this morning is a welcome victory. Now it is time for our society to retreat from our fossil fuel madness.

Our environment, our democracy and our children’s future are NOT For Sale. Today represents a pivot point, the beginning of a just transition toward a future powered by renewable energy that honors our relationship to each other, nature, and our obligation to future generations above all else.

    Outstanding. Heroes all.

Real heroes. They are wanting to save future generations. Not be soldiers who kill for supposed peace, in US military, empire

  • This Obama-nominated judge serves the 1% over the First Amendment.

The buffer zones range from 100 to 1,500 meters. Since the blockade was set up miles from the ship, how does it qualify as being within a 1500 meter zone?
