What started as a protest about environmental concerns and a luxury resort tied to President Trump’s son-in-law has turned into a mass movement against the government, with people demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister Edi Rama. The story begins with a development plan for the Vjosa-Narta lagoon, a protected wetland on Albania’s Adriatic coast, and the nearby uninhabited island of Sazan, once a secret Soviet-era military base, now eyed as the site of a luxury tourism complex.

Albania, a country in the southwestern region of the Balkan peninsula, is witnessing one of the biggest waves of anti-government protests since the final end of socialism in 1992. The protests began in late May in opposition to the construction of a multibillion-dollar luxury resort backed by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, in the protected delta area of Vjosa-Narta, but they have now become a common sight in the capital city of Tirana. The protesters, who have faced riot police and water cannons, are demanding the resignation of socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama as activists aim to put an end to politics as usual in a country where corruption and organized crime are prominent features.

Just before dusk, a crowd began marching down Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard in Tirana, Albania’s capital, toward Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office. As they approached, the sound of drums and their chants calling for “revolution” got louder. Once they arrived, the national anthem echoed throughout the avenue. Since May 31, protesters have been setting off every single day at 6 p.m. from Skanderbeg Square to take part in what has been dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution.” The iconic bird was chosen because of its connection to the natural protected area of Vjosa-Narta in Zvernec, where plans for a $1.4 billion luxury resort linked to Jared Kushner, an American real estate mogul and Donald Trump’s son-in-law, have caused fierce opposition.

Protests against a luxury resort being built on vital wetlands in Albania are now well into their third week – and they’ve attracted the ire of Albanian PM Edi Rama. He denounced the opponents of the Trump-family-linked project as exhibiting a “fascist mentality”, and denied the building works’ massive environmental impacts. On 3 June, the Canary reported on the anger against building works in the Vjosa-Narta protected landscape and the island of Sazan. At the time, the protests had lasted for three days. Now, however, the so-called ‘Flamingo Revolution’ has built momentum into a wider critique of Rama’s leadership.

Some 200 protesters on Saturday tore down metal and razor wire fences surrounding a ‌luxury development site on Albania's Adriatic coast, in another ‌sign of growing anger against construction in environmentally sensitive areas. Albanians have been protesting for ​weeks against a planned luxury resort backed by a company linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, near Vlora, which is famed for its flamingos and a turtle nesting ‌site. On Saturday, villagers from ⁠Rrjoll, located in an area of sandy beaches and pine forests in northwestern Albania, protested against another ⁠project not linked to Kushner, saying it was being built on their confiscated land.

A major coastal development project on the protected island of Sazan and the Zvërnec Peninsula — spearheaded by Affinity Partners, an investment firm linked to President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and daughter Ivanka Trump — has sparked daily waves of widespread protests in Tirana, the capital. More than 6,000 elaborate villas and accompanying luxury infrastructure for the superrich are projected. The developers estimate the enormous project will exceed €4 billion ($4.6 billion). (tinyurl.com/vc3cx4ft)  The mass demonstrations and the government repression, caught on videos of bulldozers, barbed-wire fences and security guards dragging protesters across the sand, may have a far-reaching impact.

Tens of thousands of Albanians took to the streets on 4 June to protest the impending destruction of Sazan Island and its ecologically sensitive surrounding coastline to make way for a $1.6-billion luxury resort project led by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump – the son-in-law and daughter of US President Donald Trump. Construction on the 1,400-hectare Mediterranean project, which includes Albania’s only island, is reportedly already underway, as protestors denounce the land grab as an embodiment of foreign overreach and government corruption.

Early December 2018. It all started as a seemingly spontaneous explosion of student anger against the fees imposed on students for ‘re-sit exams’ in one faculty. It almost immediately brought together thousands of students from various faculties from the University of Tirana, and soon after from the University of Agriculture in Tirana. They all came together in front of the Ministry of Education. Inspired by their fellow students in Tirana, in the following days students from other universities in the major cities of Albania organized similar protests at their own universities and some even came down to join the student protest in front of the Ministry of Education.
