Since the 1776 Declaration of Independence, the United States has only formally declared war eleven times across five conflicts, and yet it has been at war in hundreds of conflicts throughout most of its existence. To answer why the United States is locked into a state of perpetual war, we have to look to the violent seizure Indigenous land. Tracing this history back to the nation’s founding, as illuminated by the new First America podcast series, reveals how Native resistance has radically shaped U.S. history, laying the groundwork for its most violent conflicts and unchecked militarism.

We study American history for important reasons. We study because it helps us understand how events in the past continue to influence the present. We study because American history tells us who we are. Yet teaching a full and honest history is much more difficult than it should be. There are history textbooks that ignore the fact that white elites grew rich off the labor of the enslaved. There are textbooks that continue to minimize extraordinary struggles for universal suffrage. There are textbooks that fail to examine the long-term effects of forcing Indigenous young people into off-reservation boarding schools.

How Not To Celebrate Juneteenth

Juneteenth was largely a regional holiday celebrated by Black people in Texas and other southern states. It commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced that slavery ended as per General Order Number 3. "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” It is an important event that ought to be remembered, but its true significance has been lost. Juneteenth has become the latest iteration of liberal capture of Black politics, opportunistic virtue signaling, and the intentional misrepresentation of America’s history. Corrupt and avaricious corporations honor Juneteenth and cynical politicians give it great attention.
