Anti-Defamation League

How Do We Get The ADL Out Of Schools?

Since as far back as the 1980s, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has sponsored programs aimed at fighting discrimination in K-12 education. In recent years, however, the organization has narrowed its focus almost exclusively to antisemitism at the expense of other marginalized communities. In doing so, the ADL has created a coercive environment that encourages carceral solutions and monetary donations as a fix for systemic issues. Since the start of Israel's genocide against Palestinians in 2023, the ADL's illiberal leanings have been put on full display as it voiced support for the detainment of Mahmoud Khalil...

Schools Are No Place For The ADL

Although the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has long portrayed itself as a champion of civil rights, this has been undermined by its unconditional support for Israel and its efforts to weaponize antisemitism against Israel’s critics. As those fighting racism increasingly embrace the cause for Palestinian human rights, the ADL has moved further away from its commitment to racial justice. As a former ADL education director Danielle Bryant wrote in the New York Daily News: I watched from the inside as the ADL erased racial justice from its civil rights priorities, caved to pressure from conservative media for being “too woke,” and quietly abandoned core education programs. The shift began with an internal pause on its use of the word “racism”. . . .

The Asian American Foundation’s ADL Partnership Is A Betrayal

Currently entering its ninth month, Israel’s brutal assault on Gaza continues to cast fault lines in U.S. politics. Students, activists, and voters have challenged the complicity of the U.S. government, universities, and corporations in enabling the mass destruction of Gaza and the genocidal violence that has taken over 40,000 lives and counting. For some Asian American activists, the movement in defense of Palestinian lives has raised some surprising revelations about the influence of Zionism in Asian American movement spaces. Nowhere is that influence clearer than in the case of The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), the $1 billion philanthropic organization founded in May 2021 amidst rising  national attention to an increase in anti-Asian hate incidents.

Pro-Israel Racist Group ADL Moves To Co-Opt Black Lives Matter

For those who yearn for an end to systemic racism, these are exhilarating times as Black activists and organizations lead a global uprising against symbols and structures of white supremacy. But if you are a racist group masquerading as a civil rights organization, these days are fraught with the danger that you’ll get found out. It’s a balancing act that has for years bedeviled the Anti-Defamation League, a major Israel lobby group in the United States. The crisis is particularly acute right now as the ADL tries to portray itself as an ally of Black Lives Matter while also shielding Israel from criticism over its plans to annex Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, further entrenching the system of apartheid.
