A watershed moment in the fight to hold corporations accountable for complicity in Israel’s war crimes: A.P. Møller Maersk has become the first global shipping company to halt the transport of goods to and from Israeli settlements after facing increasing pressure from the Mask off Maersk campaign. This marks a seismic shift in corporate accountability, and in the shipping and logistics industry as a whole. Maersk announced on its website this month that it would cut ties with Israeli settlements in the West Bank, stating that it had “strengthened [its] screening procedures in relation to Israeli settlements, including aligning [their] screening process with the OHCHR database of businesses involved in activities in the settlements”.

Dartmouth Students Launch Hunger Strike In Support Of Gaza

Last week, six Dartmouth College students began a hunger strike in support of Gaza. The activists are demanding that Dartmouth’s Board of Trustees approve the Dartmouth Divest for Palestine divestment proposal, which was recently rejected by the college. They’re also calling for the school to lift its suspension of student Roan Wade, who was targeted over their involvement in campus protests. Mondoweiss U.S. correspondent Michael Arria spoke with Wade, and fellow hunger striker Greyson Xiao about the hunger strike. Both students are members of the Palestine Solidarity Coalition.

Students Achieve Israeli Divestment Victories On US College Campuses

Two significant US campus divestment victories were hard-won by students and community activists in San Francisco, California, and in Cambridge, Massachusetts. On 19 April, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Graduate Student Union democratically adopted a resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and for the MIT community to cut all research and financial ties with the Israeli military. According to the MIT Coalition for Palestine, along with BDS Boston, the Industrial Liaison Program of MIT officially cut its ties with Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems.

Councillors Demand RCV Engines Stop Supplying Components For Israel’s Drones

A growing coalition of Dorset councillors demand that local company RCV Engines Ltd immediately halt the export of engine components used in Israeli military drones. Local elected officials have signed an open urging the Dorset-based firm to cease its complicity in Israel’s Gaza genocide. The call follows damning revelations by Declassified UK. The investigative outlet found that RCV supplies engine components to Israel Aerospace Industries’ APUS 25 quadcopter. Israel has used these in deadly attacks on Palestinian civilians, including children, in Gaza. Dorset-based campaign umbrella the Olive Branch Coalition has coordinated the open letter to demand an end to the local company’s complicity.

Labor Demands Minnesota Divest From Apartheid Israel

Minneapolis, MN – On May 10, Minnesota public sector workers, union members and activists attended the Labor Demands Divestment teach-in and panel at the Minneapolis Federation of Educators Local 59 office. The event was organized by Minnesota Labor for Palestine and the Minnesota Anti-War Committee and was the first event organized by Minnesota Labor for Palestine, a grassroots coalition of union and non-union members based in working class solidarity with Palestine. Over 45 members of public sector unions and local advocacy groups joined to learn about Divest MN, the state campaign to get the State Board of Investment to divest public employee pensions from genocide and apartheid.

Jordan Arrests BDS Movement Coordinator Hamza Khader

Last week, Jordanian authorities arrested Hamza Khader, the coordinator of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in Jordan, and took him to an undisclosed location for investigation. According to BDS, Khader was arrested on Tuesday, May 6, over social media posts. BDS Jordan issued a statement on Wednesday, May 7, denouncing the arrest of Khader, saying that “it constitutes a clear violation of the fundamental rights of Jordanians to freedom of opinion, freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, which are guaranteed by the Jordanian constitution and the international conventions.” The movement criticized the Jordanian authorities’ use of broadly-worded provisions of the Cybercrime Laws to crackdown on individuals, who express their solidarity with the Palestinian cause, which “represents the conscience of the vast majority of Jordanian nationals.”

This Monday 17th June 2024, the University of Edinburgh Court rules on a historical decision on whether or not to begin an active and immediate process of divestment from ‘controversial weapons’ complicit in Palestinian dispossession and Israeli settler colonialism, which the University has been entangled with for well over a century. The ruling of the court could mean immediate divestment from companies like Amazon and Alphabet as their ‘AI solutions’ might be plausibly in use in the mass targeting of civilians in Gaza. This would set a grand precedent and would serve as a concrete step to reducing our institutional complicity in violence against Palestinians.

Students at Ghent University have maintained a Gaza solidarity encampment for over a month, and even after winning a major victory with their university administration agreeing to cut some key ties with Israeli institutions – they are not stopping. Peoples Dispatch spoke to Mingtje Wang of COMAC, who is a masters students at the university and participant in the encampment.
