After the Trump administration illegally kidnapped the legitimate president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on January 3rd, 2026, we saw two distinct and divergent responses from Venezuelans. On the one hand, the Venezuelan diaspora, especially in the United States, celebrated President Maduro’s kidnapping and bombing of their birth country. On the other hand, inside Venezuela, for weeks after the illegal abduction, citizens engaged in (almost) daily and massive demonstrations to condemn the attack that killed and wounded over 100 people.

The youth wing of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) carried out “Basic Revolutionary Resistance Training” over the past week in the Venezuelan state La Guaira. On the evening of August 28, the youth participated in a 10 kilometer night march led by Secretary General of PSUV, Diosdado Cabello. The training took place amid rising tensions between Washington and Caracas. The situation flared up when the administration of US President Donald Trump reiterated accusations that the Venezuelan government plays a major role in drug trafficking, increasing the bounty on the head of President Nicolás Maduro, and at the same time deploying troops to the Caribbean to support the US “war on drugs”.

This act not only marks the continuity of the Bolivarian Revolution, but also reflects the commitment of the Venezuelan people to the construction of a socialist model and in resistance to the aggression of US imperialism and the oligarchic elites. The Venezuelan reactionary sectors, supported by the US and its allies, have tried to destabilize the country on multiple occasions and once again now, with the defeated candidate Edmundo González self-proclaiming himself the winner and declaring that he will take office as president on the 10th.

The president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, called on supporters of the Chavista revolutionary movement to mobilize this Tuesday in the streets of Caracas to ensure the peace of the country and the electoral victory of President Nicolás Maduro and to reject the violence unleashed by the extremist opposition that refuses to recognize the results of the National Electoral Council and the will of the Venezuelans. “We call on all our people to march tomorrow at two in the afternoon from Petare to Miraflores, also from Catia, La Vega, and El Valle to celebrate our victory, but above all, to defend the peace of the republic,” Rodríguez said during a speech on Monday, July 29, from the Federal Legislative Palace in Caracas.

Few women – if any – in Venezuela’s “Fifth Republic” (as the Chávez and post-Chávez era is known) left as significant a mark on the country’s history as Tibisay Lucena, who died of cancer on April 12, 2023, at the age of 63. Her main accomplishment was that during the 14 years as president of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), she fundamentally reformed the country’s electoral system to make it one of the most fraud-proof systems in the world. I first met Tibisay in 1997, well before Chávez became president of Venezuela, while she was studying for an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) President Pedro Calzadilla reported a 41.80 percent turnout in Sunday's Subnational elections. Having counted 90.21 percent of the ballots cast in the elections, Calzadilla reaffirmed that the elections took place in a peaceful environment. The United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) candidates hold leads in 20 out of 23 states for the governor's race. Meanwhile, the opposition coalition United Democratic Table (MUD) candidates secured a lead in the Cojedes and Zulia states. Neighbors Force (FV) party secured the other governor post for opposition sectors in the Nueva Esparta State. "Nothing disturbed the electoral process ... International observers move freely throughout the country to verify the electoral process...
