Delhi—Protesters occupying the central parts of Delhi, India were triumphant on Saturday evening after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government accepted all demands raised by the movement’s leaders, including the resignation of the country’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest was spearheaded by the newly formed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)—a wordplay on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The word “cockroach” is attributed to the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who in May referred to the youth of the country as “cockroaches” during a court hearing.

Baton-wielding riot police fired tear gas and charged into crowds of student and youth demonstrators in New Delhi Monday as more than 10,000 supporters of India’s “Cockroach” movement tried to march on Parliament, in the largest and bloodiest confrontation yet between the right-wing Narendra Modi government and a protest movement that has grown into the most serious challenge to his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in years. The demonstrators, marching under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)—or Cockroach People Party—were demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

On June 29, thousands of people gathered at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar — the capital’s designated site for public demonstration — in the second week of a growing sit-in accompanied by a wave of online dissent. What is being called India’s first “Gen Z protest” was spurred by an education system that many young Indians believe has failed to offer fair opportunities. Protesters arrived carrying the Indian flag, copies of the constitution and red roses, which they handed to police officers stationed at the venue. Volunteers reminded participants to remain disciplined, avoid confrontation and document events on their phones.
