German Students Expand Strike Against Conscription, Militarization

On May 8, 45,000 students joined a school strike against conscription and militarization in 150 cities across the country. The strike was held on the 81st anniversary of Victory Day, which brought peace to Europe at the end of World War II. This was the third school strike since December 5, 2025, the day the new conscription law was passed unanimously by the German parliament, the Bundestag. In Berlin, around 7,500 students marched from Brandenburger Tor to the headquarters of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU), the party of current Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

At 11:00 am, teenagers started flooding Potsdamer Platz. They came from schools around the city, marching in groups of 50 or 100, waving banners and banging drums. “Not one person and not one penny for the Bundeswehr,” they chanted. “I don’t want to die for a country that doesn’t offer me anything,” said Karl, 18, a student at Evangelische Schule Berlin Zentrum in Mitte. “They talk about protecting us while cutting funding for education and culture.” On January 1, Germany’s military began sending out questionnaires to people born in 2008 as they turn 18 this year.

At the beginning of June, Kiev took measures to toughen its military conscription, despite the fact that deaths and injuries of Ukrainian soldiers and support personnel continue to increase as the US/NATO proxy war continues to grind on. The gaps along the front lines, which Ukraine is desperately struggling to hold, are increasingly being filled by unmotivated, conscripted soldiers, a growing number of whom have health problems restricting how long their rotation may last. For the Ukrainian authorities, the dragooning of cannon fodder (military conscripts) into their increasingly stretched military front lines remains a matter for more Western funds and weapons from the West to help solve.
