Italian Port Authorities Halt Israel-Bound Shipments Of ‘Military-Grade Steel’

Italian authorities are holding three shipments suspected of carrying military-grade steel from India to Israel after activists from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and No Harbour for Genocide (NHB) exposed their contents, Middle East Eye (MEE) reported on 18 May. According to the activists, the shipments amount to roughly 806 tonnes of military-grade steel and could be used to manufacture up to 17,458 artillery shells for the Israeli army. They said the cargo originated from R L Steels & Energy Limited in Aurangabad and was destined for IMI Systems, now known as Elbit Systems Land, in Ramat Hasharon.

Tens of thousands of people in four Croatian cities took to the streets on Sunday, November 30, responding to a call from the initiative United Against Fascism (Ujedinjeni protiv fašizma), a broad coalition of civil society organizations and grassroots groups. Marchers in Zagreb, Rijeka, Zadar, and Pula denounced the escalating wave of far-right violence and historical revisionism, vowing to build broad resistance to trends that are encouraged and supported by the political establishment. “We stand united against fascism because, day after day, we are not witnessing isolated outbursts, but the emergence of a blueprint – one that grows when we remain silent, gains strength when we tolerate it, and ultimately turns fear into the rule rather than the exception,” United Against Fascism declared in its call.

In the local elections held in Croatia on 16 and 30 May 2021, a left-green political platform Zagreb je Naš/Možemo! (‘Zagreb is Ours’/’Yes, We Can!’) won 23 out of 47 seats in the City Assembly, and its candidate for mayor, Tomislav Tomašević, won a convincing victory, defeating his right-wing opponent with 65% of the votes. The platform was formed in early 2017 by a group of activists from social movements and NGOs working on issues of public space, the commons, environmental concerns, independent culture, human rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ initiatives, workers’ rights, and more. Frequently presenting themselves with ‘one foot in activism, the other in electoral politics’, the motivation for fielding candidates in the 2017 Zagreb local elections was to advance a genuine alternative to the corrupt nationalist-populist politics that had defined local government in Croatia’s capital for two decades.
