Lebanon Deadly Pager Blasts: What We Know So Far

At least 12 people were killed and nearly 3,000 injured on Tuesday when pagers commonly used for communication by Hezbollah members exploded almost simultaneously across Lebanon. The details of how this highly sophisticated attack was carried out remain unclear, though Hezbollah has blamed its adversary, Israel. The Israeli military has so far declined to comment. Here is what we know so far. When And Where Did The Blasts Take Place? The blasts began in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, with scores of incidents reported in the southern suburb of Dahiyeh and other areas of the country at about 3.45pm (12.45pm GMT) on Tuesday. According to footage seen by Middle East Eye, some of the detonations occurred after the pagers went off, prompting their owners to bring them close to their faces or hands to check the screens.

Resistance Groups Denounce Israel’s Cyberattack On Lebanon

We, in the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), strongly condemn the Zionist terrorist aggression that targeted Lebanese citizens by detonating communication devices in various areas of Lebanese territory, as well as civilian and service facilities. This attack injured thousands of citizens, without distinguishing between fighters and civilians, and resulted in the martyrdom of several individuals. This crime defies all laws and norms, and we hold the occupation government fully responsible for the consequences of this dangerous crime. This terrorist operation comes as part of the systematic Zionist aggression on the region and the policy of arrogance and tyranny adopted by the occupation government, backed by U.S. support that provides cover for its fascist crimes.

Venezuela Under Cyberattack: Over 106 State Institutions Targeted

Over 106 state institutions have been subjected to cyber attacks in Venezuela since July 28—the date of the Venezuelan presidential elections—according to reports from the Venezuelan minister for science and technology, Gabriela Jiménez. In an interview on the programme Aquí y Ahora—broadcast by the news outlet La IguanaTV—Jiménez explained that these attacks have increased since last Monday, August 12, when the National Defense Council and the Council of State met to establish the National Cybersecurity Council. She explained that these attacks have been designed specifically to target government institutions, and thus steal information from the state.

NATO Proclamation At Annual Summit Threatens The Peace

The NATO proclamation—promoted at its annual summit this week—that a cyber attack could trigger Article 5 of the NATO treaty heightens the risk of military confrontation with Russia or China. So does a new stipulation—announced at the summit—that space attacks could trigger Article 5. Russia has already been accused of testing space-based anti-satellite weapons, which could be adopted as a justification now for war. Article 5 says that the NATO alliance regards an attack on one of its members as an attack on all of them. That is supposed to come into play only in case of an armed attack, since that is the only kind of attack under the UN Charter that warrants responsive use of force. If one expands the concept of armed attack in violation of the UN Charter, one opens a broader path to the use of force.

The Iranians believe that the Americans disabled their radar system after Iran fired missiles at US troops housed in Iraqi bases in Anbar and Erbil.

Venezuela: Cyber Attack On Electric Grid Came From U.S.

Caracas, VZ - The constitutional president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, denounced on Friday that the cyber attack against the Venezuelan electric system, which caused a five-day national blackout, was directed from Houston and Chicago, cities in the United States. All services were taken away from the Venezuelan "people, in an attack commanded directly by the United States and by John Bolton," who is the National Security Advisor for the White House, President Nicolas Maduro said during a televised national address in Caracas, held by the Armed Forces and Venezuelan governors.
