Dr Hussam Abu Safia Faces ‘Major Health Deterioration’ In Israeli Custody

The head of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, Doctor Hussam Abu Safia, is experiencing a major deterioration in his health due to severe torture and beatings inflicted by Israeli jailers, the Palestinian Prisoners Information Office informed on 5 August. The Palestinian doctor is currently being held in Israel’s underground Rakevet torture center, located within Nitzan Prison. Abu Safia was targeted during a brutal raid by Israeli officers at the facility on 27 July.  According to the statement, Palestinian prisoners were beaten with batons, shocked with electricity, exposed to tear gas, and shot with rubber bullets.

National Single Payer, a national, grassroots organization joined by the principles that health care is a human right, must be free from profit, and will be achieved through national legislation, endorses the appeal issued by Doctors Against Genocide for immediate international action on behalf of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian pediatrician detained by Israeli Occupation Forces in December 2024 because he refused to abandon his patients under his care. We call on every government, medical association, hospital, university, humanitarian organization, and elected official to demand his immediate release.

Just over 1,000 days into Israeli forces’ genocidal violence against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, a United Nations commission has forcefully denounced Israel’s treatment of health workers from the besieged territory and specifically demanded “the immediate, unconditional, and safe release” of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. Israel has detained Abu Safiya without charge since capturing him at Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, where he was the director, in December 2024. Renewed calls for Abu Safiya’s release have mounted in recent days following his transfer to the underground Rakefet interrogation facility at Nitzan Prison, where his lawyer, Nasser Odeh, said that his life is at risk.

Worldwide campaigns, by Amnesty International and other human rights groups, have called for Dr. Abu Safiya’s release and global media coverage has been significant. Britain’s flagship newspaper, the Guardian, has naturally already reported about Dr. Abu Safiya. Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the Kamal Adwan Hospital director who was abducted from Gaza by Israel in late 2024, is facing an immediate risk of death due to the torture and severe negligence he has been subjected to by his jailers, the physician’s lawyer said on 4 July.  “Alarming new information conveyed by … Abu Safia's lawyer, in cooperation with Physicians for Human Rights, conclusively demonstrates that Israeli occupation authorities are intensifying direct targeting of Dr. Abu Safia by subjecting him to systematic torture and harsh detention conditions,” Palestinian Prisoners’ Club (PPC) said.

The footage, taken during his first appearance before an Israeli court on Wednesday, June 10, shows his health condition remarkably deteriorating. My detention is “unjust” and arbitrary and I demand my immediate release, Abu Safiya maintained. This is the second time that footage surfaced revealing the dire situation of the prominent Palestinian physician under Israeli custody.

Israeli authorities are reportedly pursuing another six-month extension to the imprisonment of Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, taken by Israeli occupation forces from Kamal Adwan Hospital over two years ago, ahead of a hearing announced for Tuesday, April 28. Dr. Abu Safiya has been held in administrative detention – a status that allows Israeli authorities to imprison Palestinians for an undefined amount of time without charge or trial – ever since he was taken captive in December 2024. Over the past months, family members, health workers, and UN experts have raised the alarm over Dr. Abu Safiya’s condition.

Two United Nations experts have called on Israel to immediately release Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya from detention following reports that he had been subjected to "severe torture".  Special Rapporteurs Tlaleng Mofokeng and Ben Saul said on Tuesday that the former director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in north Gaza faced severe torture and "other cruel and degrading treatment", leaving him in a "dire" health condition. “The conditions of his detention appear to be flagrantly arbitrary and manifestly inconsistent with the Mandela Rules, which establish the obligation of states to ensure prisoners have access to healthcare," they added.

One year ago, a iconic photograph from Gaza went viral worldwide. It showed a man in a white physician’s coat walking, unarmed, through a destroyed landscape of rubble toward two Israeli army tanks. That man was Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a pediatrician who was the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. He was walking toward his arrest. A year later, Dr. Abu Safya is still in an Israeli prison. He has not been officially charged with anything. His lawyer says he has lost a third of his body weight and suffers from heart problems.

Exactly one year after Israeli forces kidnapped Kamal Adwan Hospital director Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, relatives and health officials renewed demands for his release on 27 December, citing his deteriorating health. The anniversary prompted statements from Gaza authorities and international rights groups calling for disclosure of his fate and an end to his arbitrary detention. Occupation forces took Dr. Abu Safia on 27 December 2024 during a military raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia. At the time, the hospital was the last operational medical center serving northern Gaza. Witness accounts said he was detained while actively carrying out his medical duties.

After multiple postponements by the Israeli occupation, Kamal Adwan Hospital director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya was finally allowed to see a lawyer. The visit confirmed suspicions about the torture he has endured since his arbitrary imprisonment at the end of December 2024. According to reports from Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, Dr. Abu Safiya suffered the same methods of torture inflicted by Israeli forces on all Palestinian prisoners, including having his hands tightly shackled and being forced to kneel and sit on gravel for hours.
