Elliott Abrams

The Crimes And Dangers Of Elliott Abrams

It was a bright sunny March morning in 1980. Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was saying mass at a church hospital in San Salvador when a bullet from a sniper rifle ripped through his heart. He stumbled and fell to the ground, dead. Romero started life and ministry as a conservative. But, after his friend Rev. Rutilio Grande was assassinated to discourage other faith leaders from supporting Salvadorian peasants, Romero underwent a political and theological conversion. Picking up where Grande left off, Romero embraced a “theology of liberation,” a perspective that espouses G-d’s preference for the poor and oppressed.

Biden Nominates Elliott Abrams To Public Diplomacy Commission

President Biden announced Monday that he will nominate Elliott Abrams to the bipartisan United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, CNN has reported. Abrams is a neoconservative hawk who led the Trump administration’s failed Venezuela regime change effort, which involved crushing economic sanctions that are still in effect today, besides Biden giving Chevron a limited license to pump oil in the country. Toward the end of Trump’s presidency, Abrams was also assigned as the US’s top Iran envoy, where he oversaw a sanctions policy designed to prevent President Biden from re-entering the Iran nuclear deal.

How The US Failed At Its Foreign Policy Toward Venezuela

On August 4, 2020, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing on Venezuela. Appearing before the committee was U.S. State Department Special Representative Elliott Abrams. Abrams, who has had a long—and controversial—career in the formation of U.S. foreign policy, was assaulted by almost all the members of the Senate committee. The senators, almost without exception, suggested that Abrams had been—since 2019—responsible for a failed U.S. attempt to overthrow the Venezuelan government of President Nicolás Maduro.

CODEPINK Denounces Elliott Abrams’ Appointment As US Special Representative For Iran

The appointment of Elliott Abrams to replace Brian Hook as the next U.S. Special Representative for Iran is another low point for the Trump administration’s disastrous policy towards Iran. The dangerous conflict resulting from Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement will be exacerbated by a man committed to Washington’s failed policies of regime change, including in his present-day position as Trump’s representative for Venezuela. Elliott Abrams has made a career of lying and committing criminal acts that have led to the death and suffering of innocent people from Guatemala to Iraq.

18 Years After US Coup Against Venezuela, Pompeo And Abrams Warn Another Is Coming

On the eighteenth anniversary of the U.S.-backed coup against the government of Venezuela, senior American officials announced that the people should prepare for another imminent push. “The goal is to replace [President Nicolas] Maduro’s illegitimate dictatorship with a legitimate transitional government that can hold free and fair elections to represent all Venezuelans. It is time for Maduro to go,” announced Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. On Saturday the eleventh, exactly 18 years after the U.S. supported a briefly successful coup against Hugo Chavez, American envoy for Venezuela and coup specialist Elliott Abrams warned that if Maduro resisted the implementation of said “transitional government” his departure would be far more “dangerous and abrupt,” effectively threatening him with another assassination attempt, like the one the U.S. tacitly supported in 2018.

Elliott Abrams Disrupted Over ‘Maximum Pressure March’ Campaign Against Venezuela

Members of CODEPINK interrupted a speech by Elliott Abrams hosted by The Alexander Hamilton Society at SAIS, the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in D.C. Abrams, named Special Representative on Venezuela by President Donald Trump in January 2019, oversees the administration’s regime change efforts in Venezuela. The administration’s rhetoric has become significantly more aggressive in 2020, with Trump himself threatening to “smash” and destroy the legitimate elected government of Venezuela. The State Department has followed suit, recently declaring that the “Monroe Doctrine 2.0” is in effect and that this month will be known as “maximum pressure March.” In addition to intensifying its sanctions against Venezuela, the Trump administration has threatened a military blockade and has recently met with the presidents of Brazil and Colombia to coordinate their regime change efforts.
