EU Sanctions Journalist In Shocking First Over Gaza Reporting

In January, a post I saw on Twitter/X shocked me. “URGENT: As of now, I have ZERO access to any money,” Hüseyin Dogru wrote. “I can’t provide food for my family, including two newborns, due to EU sanctions.” Dogru is a journalist, a German citizen living in Berlin. After reading his post, I sent him a private message offering to order groceries and have them sent to his home. The reply shocked me even more. “Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to accept any financial or material support,” Dogru wrote. Dogru is the first European Union citizen known to be living inside the EU to face extrajudicial sanctions imposed by Brussels – robbing him of fundamental civil and humanitarian rights.

Workers In Europe Refuse Cargo To Israel

A growing number of logistics and transport workers, along with trade unions across Europe, are taking action against military shipments to Israel as it continues its genocide in the Gaza Strip. One of the most recent examples is the refusal by airport workers in Paris, primarily organized by the trade unions SUD Aérien and CGT Roissy, to deal with military cargo destined for Israel. “As workers in the aviation sector, we categorically refuse to participate, directly or indirectly, in logistical operations that could contribute to the crimes currently being committed in Gaza,” SUD Aérien stated. French workers have also called for similar blockades in other locations, expressing their solidarity with Palestinians.

The building of a broad anti-war and disarmament movement in Italy continues, as trade unions and left groups prepare for June 21 – the planned date of a national demonstration against Europe’s ongoing armament agenda. In the lead-up to the event, the political party Potere al Popolo organized meetings under the slogan “Let’s Disarm Them!” in both Naples and Rome during the weekend of May 24–25. With international guests including Ione Belarra from Podemos, Clémence Guetté from France Unbowed, and Marc Botenga from the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB-PVDA), the meetings aimed to highlight key priorities for a national and regional peace movement to rally around.
