Far-right in Europe

We Have To Restore People’s Confidence In Collective Strength

In a recent interview with German Foreign Policy, Peter Mertens talks about the wave of protests in Belgium against the erosion of workers’ rights and social standards, which has been ongoing for more than a year. Mertens is an author and General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PVDA-PTB), which has participated in the trade union-led demonstrations and strikes from the outset and is currently the strongest party in the capital region of Brussels, polling at more than a quarter of the vote. Mertens argues that the link between social protests and the fight against militarization is obvious: “It is the same people who are footing the bill for both”; this is “impossible to ignore”.

Maccabi’s Birmingham Match Met With Protests

Protests took place in Birmingham on Thursday, November 6 as local football club Aston Villa faced Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv. The match took place after authorities banned visiting supporters over security concerns. Palestine solidarity groups and anti-racist organizations called for the match to be fully canceled, citing the violent record of Maccabi supporters and the club’s support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza. “Allowing football clubs from a state committing genocide and implementing apartheid to compete in international competitions normalizes its atrocities, and sends the signal that there are no consequences for them,” the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) stated ahead of the match.

France Takes Action Against Racism And Far-Right Hate

Hundreds of thousands of people swept through the streets of over 200 locations across France on Saturday, March 22, in a massive national demonstration against racism and the far right. The mobilization, launched by nearly 600 organizations – including trade unions, associations, informal collectives, and left political parties – was a collective response to racism, Islamophobia, and other forms of systemic discrimination and the escalation of hate-driven rhetoric promoted by the right. The demonstrations were taken up by participants as a show of unity, standing in stark contrast to what many speakers at the demonstrations described as attempts by the government and far-right forces to divide the public.
