Unique Indigenous Gathering Issues Hard-Hitting Landmark Declaration

Nairobi: A unique gathering of Indigenous people impacted by conservation has demanded that “our ancestral lands, including those grabbed for parks and wildlife sanctuaries, be returned.” The Nairobi Declaration, issued today by the newly-formed Indigenous Lands Alliance, also contains a blunt ultimatum to well-known conservation bodies, including WWF, WCS, African Parks, UNESCO and others: “Leave our lands and respect our rights, or else we shall kick you out.” The Our Land, Our Nature gathering brought together for the first time Indigenous representatives from around the world who are fighting conservation – to expose the human cost of fortress conservation and carbon markets, while presenting Indigenous-led alternatives.

Israel Took Another Major Step Towards West Bank Annexation

Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has moved to transfer security authority over Israeli settlements and settlers in the occupied West Bank from the Israeli army to the civil police, a decision Palestinians read as a decisive step toward the de facto annexation of the territory, and one that places the settler movement, in effect, in charge of policing itself. Katz gave the Israeli army two weeks to draft a plan to transfer powers to the police, while the army’s role in the West Bank would be limited to “managing” Palestinians and controlling borders. The announcement, made last Monday, came after ten days of settlers besieging three Palestinian families in the village of Qusra, south of Nablus.

On a late-May morning in the bustling commercial district of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, David Nollman flags down pedestrians to gather signatures on a petition. The 78-year-old is soliciting support for efforts to preserve the affordability of the Forbes Building, a nearby subsidized apartment that houses mostly elderly and disabled residents, which he’s called home for 11 years. “I try to catch people before they go by and say, ​‘What we’re actually trying to do is to save 147 units of affordable housing for elderly people who may end up on the street,’” says Nollman. ​“If they’re already past, most of the time they’ll stop and come back.”

When the Eaton and Palisades fires tore through Los Angeles in January 2025, they did so on a scale the city had never before endured. Fire, of course, is not anomalous in Los Angeles. It is a recurring and constitutive feature of the region’s ecology. What distinguished these fires was their magnitude. The Eaton and Palisades fires displaced more people than any California fire in over a century, including the 2018 Camp Fire—the deadliest in the state’s history—and other conflagrations over the past decade. Over the course of twenty-four days, roughly 150,000 residents were forced from their homes.

Bassam Ideis opens the large gate leading to his home’s courtyard in the Masoudiyya area of the northern West Bank to welcome his guests, staying by the entrance to shut it quickly behind him. Before walking away, he turns back after a few steps to check that it’s locked. Settler incursions from the new outpost erected on May 15 have increased of late. He checks the lock again, just to be sure. On either side of the gate, a long fence encircles the Ideis family home. Iron shutters have been placed over every window. Children rarely come out to play in the courtyard, and the entire property looks abandoned from the outside.

Thousands are taking to the streets of the capital, Kolkata, and other major cities in the Indian state of West Bengal everyday against the newly elected ultra-right-wing government’s policy of large-scale demolitions of houses and small shops.  The mobilizations, some spontaneous but mostly organized by the left parties in the state, are a result of the left’s call to not allow such actions to take place without proper rehabilitation and compensation, as most of the affected are poor and marginalized people. Whenever the bulldozers turn up for demolition without prior notification and well announced rehabilitation plans, cadres and local leaders of the left parties, carrying red flags and banners, march with the affected population often surrounding them and forcing them to retreat.

In an era when the Fair Housing Act is under attack across the country, a nonprofit in Portland, Oregon, has broken ground on a mixed-use development project that will house hundreds of Black Portlanders who were previously displaced by the city’s use of eminent domain. The $163 million project, on a 2.99-acre site at the intersection of North Russell Street and North Williams Avenue, will eventually be home to former residents and their descendants of Albina. The community in the North and Northeast sections of the city was once home to nearly 80% of Portland’s Black population.

Before daybreak on March 2, in response to the U.S.-Israel attack on Iran and assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel from Lebanon. Israel retaliated with air strikes on Beirut and its suburbs, renewing the decades-old conflict between the two countries. Thousands fled their homes. Over the course of March, Hezbollah attacks continued and Israel escalated to a large-scale military operation across Lebanon, including a ground invasion. There were more strikes on residential neighborhoods and “evacuation notices” spanning large parts of south Lebanon. 

Indigenous Families Forced To Flee From Indonesian Security Forces

New raids and aerial strikes by Indonesian security forces in the central highlands of West Papua have once again forced Indigenous civilians to flee their homes and makeshift refugee camps into surrounding forests. Residents of Puncak Regency, already displaced by earlier clashes, were among those uprooted in the latest wave of violence that began with intensified military operations at the end of January. Civilians from at least nine villages in the Kembru District abandoned settlements and camps after what local monitors describe as air and ground strikes — including drone attacks near civilian areas — left families with little choice but to flee on foot through rugged terrain.

Yemeni Resistance Leader Vows To Target Israeli Presence In Somalia

The leader of Yemen’s Ansarallah resistance movement, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, warned in a speech on 28 December that any potential Israeli presence in Somaliland will be considered a “military target” for the Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF).  The speech came as several African, Arab, and Muslim states condemned Israel’s decision last week to recognize the sovereignty of the separatist Republic of Somaliland, which Somalia views as one of its federal states.  Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is “a hostile stance targeting Somalia and its African surroundings, as well as Yemen and the Red Sea and the countries on its shores,” Houthi said on Sunday.

US Reconstruction Plans Threaten To Erase West Bank Refugee Camps

It has been well over 200 days since the people of the Tulkarem, Nur Shams, and Jenin refugee camps were forced out of their homes by the Israeli army during its offensive in the northern West Bank dubbed “Operation Iron Wall.” Over 40,000 Palestinians from these camps have been displaced for the past eleven months, many of them living in deplorable conditions, and without a clear return to their homes on the horizon. These thousands of families have been displaced within their own cities, and are totally reliant upon community resources for survival.

US To Build Internment-Style Camps In Israeli-Controlled Gaza

US President Donald Trump's administration is advancing a controversial plan to build what US officials called “Alternate Safe Communities” for displaced Palestinians inside the Israeli-controlled areas in Gaza that make up half of the strip, The Atlantic reported on 10 November. According to The Atlantic, the initiative envisions a string of US-backed settlements for Palestinians screened and approved by Israel’s domestic intelligence service. Anyone – or their relatives – found to be affiliated with or supportive of Hamas would be barred from entry, effectively separating them from the majority still living under Hamas administration on the western side of what Israeli troops now call the “yellow line.”

A West Bank Village Calls For International Support

In the hills of Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank, a small Bedouin community in the village of Umm al-Khair has fought for decades to remain on their land, a rocky landscape dotted with olive trees, where they farm and raise livestock. As a community with a steadfast commitment to nonviolent struggle, they document and fight back against increasing settler violence and land annexation for the illegal Israeli settlement expansion that surrounds their homes.  In an attack on Oct. 28, the community of 300 people was raided by the Israeli occupation forces and handed a series of final demolition orders for 11 residential homes, a community center, a playground and a greenhouse.

Elderly Public Housing Residents In Chelsea Ordered To Move Out

Last Saturday, roughly 15 to 20 Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea [FEC] public housing tenants fighting the impending destruction of their homes intercepted Council Member Erik Bottcher outside a Manhattan deli at W. 26th Street and 9th Avenue demanding a meeting with him and challenging his support of the demolition plan Community Board 4 has already rejected. They got the meeting with him that afternoon—but didn’t like what they heard. According to Midtown South Community Council President John Mudd, who was also at the Sept. 20 meeting, Council Member Bottcher listened to the elderly FEC tenants express their opposition to the demolition plan “with no filters or anyone to run interference” for about 45 minutes.
