How To Build A Real General Strike Against ICE

What will it take to stop ICE and Donald Trump? More and more Americans are coming around to the following answer: a general strike. They’re right to move in that direction. General strikes are a powerful tactic that have defeated corrupt and authoritarian rulers across the world, most recently in Egypt and Tunisia in 2011, Puerto Rico in 2019, and Sri Lanka in 2022. As the union anthem “Solidarity Forever” puts it, “without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn.” Unfortunately, last Friday’s national call for “no work, no school, no shopping,” billed widely as an anti-ICE general strike over social media, came nowhere close to the projections of its most vocal advocates.

Unions in Minnesota and across the country are gearing up for new mass actions after the public execution of one of their own, ICU nurse and American Federation of Government Employees Local 3669 member Alex Jeffrey Pretti. Federal immigration agents shot Pretti in the back ten times in five seconds on Saturday as he attempted to help a woman they had thrown to the ground. His last words were to her: “Are you OK?” Organized labor responded immediately to Pretti’s execution with rage and anguish, including the National Nurses United (NNU), which said Monday afternoon that it is holding a national week of action, including vigils every night this week.

Italian Workers Are Building A Global Movement Against Fascism, Launch February 6

Last Fall, Italians turned out in massive numbers to support the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza and to stop weapons shipments to Israel. They held nationwide days of action to "Block Everything." The Unione Syndicale de Base (USB), a grassroots worker-led organization, supported those actions and is now building an international day of action on February 6 against militarization and for stronger social programs. Clearing the FOG speaks with Francesco Staccioli, who leads USB's international organizing, about the current conditions for workers in Italy, state repression, and the necessity of building a global movement against the rise of fascism. Staccioli describes fascism as a product of capitalism and warns that we must work in solidarity to stop fascism and build alternative structures.

Argentinian Unions Hold General Strike After Retirees Protest

On Thursday, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), Argentina’s largest labor union federation, called for a 24-hour general strike to protest President Javier Milei’s austerity policies. The strike, supported by the Argentinian Workers’ Central Union (CTA) and 50 nationally significant unions, demands better wage conditions in response to the ongoing economic crisis. The wave of protests began on Wednesday, with several unions joining a demonstration led by retirees who have been protesting weekly for years in front of Congress, demanding improved conditions.
