While the US-Israeli war on Iran and its economic repercussions on the global economy continues to be at the center of global media attention, Israel is in the process of re-drawing the map of the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon. If successful, Israel’s plans could have regional and global repercussions. And yet, the Israeli invasion of Lebanon has barely made a blip on the Western media’s radar. Last week, Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, said that Israeli forces will not leave the south of Lebanon after the end of the current war. Katz’s statements are in line with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said last weekend that he had instructed the Israeli army to expand its control in the south of Lebanon up to 10 kilometers, to create a “security buffer zone.”

While addressing the 80th annual session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, September 24, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated his country’s resolve to not seek a nuclear weapon. Pezeshkian claimed that it is not the threat of sanctions or war but its religious conviction and the dictate of the country’s supreme leader which prevents Iran from developing nuclear bombs and any other kind of weapons of mass destruction. He questioned the countries accusing Iran of developing a nuclear bomb while they themselves possess the “largest nuclear arsenals” and have violated the provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) through the years to make their weapons more deadly. Pezeshkian rejected the allegations as baseless and spurious, claiming Iran’s nuclear program has always been for peaceful purposes.

Not only did Israel fail to evacuate its army from Southern Lebanon on Sunday, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement, its forces also shot over 130 Lebanese civilians attempting to return home in accordance with the deal, killing 23 and wounding 109 (of whom some are in critical condition). This included a 12-year-old boy wounded in the neck in Kfarkela, standing right next to my local producer Mahmood. I was 20 yards away and on my way to them. Four were killed in Kfarkela and overnight the Israeli army demolished numerous homes there in “punishment.”
