Green Energy Transition

The Most Dangerous Climate Argument Today Isn’t Denial, It’s Delay

Under Donald Trump’s renewed push to expand fossil fuel production — including plans to ramp up oil and gas drilling and roll back climate regulations — climate politics in the United States is entering a new phase. Although Trump’s climate agenda is very much aligned with outright denial, it has become less central in mainstream climate action debate. Instead, opposition to policies such as carbon pricing, emissions standards, and fossil fuel phaseouts remains strong. At the same time, the impacts of climate change are becoming harder to ignore.

DIY Diehards Building Green Infrastructure From Scratch

Even at a young age, Jonathan Schreiber found that harnessing the power of wind was something of a breeze. Encouraged by his DIY-loving grandfather, the Austrian teenager was always playing around with scrap metal, trying to build tools. At 14, he began studying a book on how to build a wind turbine from old car parts. “I was fascinated by how you could build things yourself and actually create your own energy,” says Schreiber. But it was in 2012, when Schreiber turned 18, that his life would be blown onto a new path. He heard about a man who was an expert in building his own wind turbines.

Teachers Unions Leverage Contracts To Fight Climate Change

In Illinois, the Chicago Teachers Union won a contract with the city’s schools to add solar panels on some buildings and clean energy career pathways for students, among other actions. In Minnesota, the Minneapolis Federation of Educators demanded that the district create a task force on environmental issues and provide free metro passes for students. And in California, the Los Angeles teachers union’s demands include electrifying the district’s bus fleet and providing electric vehicle charging stations at all schools.

The UAW Has A Vision For Green Industrial Policy In California

A consensus is emerging across the political spectrum around the need for industrial policy. Whether in the form of the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act under Joe Biden in 2022 or the haphazard tariff policy of Donald Trump implemented earlier this year, political leaders on both sides of the aisle are clearly searching for answers regarding how to revive the United States’s flagging manufacturing base. While the Trump administration places a lot of rhetorical emphasis on bringing back industrial jobs, its policies so far have displayed a profound lack of seriousness or coherence. Trump’s tariffs have not been focused on strategic industries or paired with the investment and planning required to make jobs actually materialize.
