On January 29, the White House issued an official statement declaring a national emergency in the United States because, it claims, “the policies, practices, and actions of the Government of Cuba constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat, which has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States, to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.” According to the statement, the Cuban government “aligns” itself with hostile countries, terrorist groups, and “malign actors adverse to the United States,” which the White House considers to include Russia, China, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

Like climate change, the federal government shutdown affects Indigenous communities in the country first and harsher than other communities. There are several reasons why, including that federally recognized tribes have a political relationship with the federal government that is based on the laws that founded this country. In exchange for land, the federal government made provisions—consider them as promises—to tribes and their citizens in various legal processes such as treaties, executive orders, and legislation. In exchange for land, the federal government created unique programs only available to federally recognized tribes largely in the areas of housing, education, healthcare and law enforcement.

Youth-led grassroots organisations London for Sudan, Cardiff For Sudan, Manchester For Sudan, and Madaniya are organising a nationwide demonstration in London, Cardiff, and Manchester to demand accountability for the devastating war on civilians in Sudan. Titled “Hands Off Sudan: End Western Complicity and Inaction,” this protest is a direct response to the silence surrounding one of the most gravest humanitarian crises of our time. The mobilisation aims to pressure the UK government to take accountability for its role in prolonging the conflict and to call out other international players, including the US, for their involvement in the atrocities.

Humanitarian Caravan Advances In Colombia

The Caravan for Life, Peace and Permanence in the Territory is an act of solidarity with the people living in the regions most affected by violence in Colombia. It is made up of multiple national and international social organizations that, from July 23 to August 23, will travel through five regions of the South American country (Antioquia, Sur de Bolívar, Arauca, Chocó, Cauca and Valle del Cauca), in order to record denunciations associated with the violation of Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, as well as the alternatives that the population is building to live in dignity. Currently, caravan members are in the south of Bolivar, a region that for three years has been experiencing a humanitarian crisis due to the presence of paramilitarism.

Political Deadlock Continues In Efforts To Open Peace Talks In Sudan

A United Nations Security Council resolution was passed on June 13 calling for an end to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) siege upon the North Darfur capital city of El Fasher in Sudan. In a 14-0 vote with the Russian Federation abstaining, the highest decision-making structure of the international body demanded the end to the fighting in one of the most restive areas inside the country. The resolution was sponsored by United Kingdom (UK) Ambassador Barbara Woodward who pointed to the worsening humanitarian crisis in the area. Civilians are being prevented from moving freely in and out of El Fasher while essential infrastructure such as hospitals are being shelled by the RSF.
