Braving scorching summer heat, 25,000 people rallied outside Japan’s National Diet building on July 20-21, part of a wave of protests at more than 270 locations across the country. The target of their anger: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s push to gut proportional representation in the lower house of parliament, a move critics say is designed to silence women and opposition parties alike. The rally, live-streamed to tens of thousands of other viewers, was the latest and largest mobilization against a bill backed by Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner, the right-wing Japan Innovation Party (Ishin).

Iraqi lawmakers have fired back at Washington’s interference in a government bill to further institutionalize the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) into the state. Mahdi al-Ameri, an Iraqi MP with ties to the PMU, told Rudaw on 5 August that they “will not submit to any external pressures regarding Iraq and Iraq's sovereignty,” adding that the law will serve all Iraqis. “When we say Popular Mobilization Forces, we have Sunni, Shia, Christian, and Shabak PMUs. Even our Kurdish brothers are present in this institution. This is a security institution linked to the commander-in-chief of the armed forces,” he added. The lawmaker stressed that there is a determination to pass the law despite US intervention.

Honolulu, Hawaiʻi — After more than two years of steadfast community advocacy and legislative effort, the Water Alliance Initiative Act—addressing long term clean up and remediation of Oahu’s water and land and protecting the water source for over 400,000 residents—was signed into law on Friday, June 6, 2025, and is now officially Act 197 (Gov. Msg. No. 1297). This landmark law creates a WAI Policy Coordinator under the Department of Land and Natural Resources and establishes a Red Hill Remediation Special Fund to support long-term cleanup, monitoring, public education, and restoration of Oʻahu’s primary aquifer in the wake of the 2021 Red Hill fuel contamination crisis.
