Mediterranean Dockworkers Mobilize For Antiwar Strike February 6

The grassroots union (Unione Sindacale di Base) of dockworkers located in Genoa, Italy, which has held antiwar general strikes in the summer and fall of 2025, is moving forward with an international general strike for Feb. 6, 2026. This Jan. 23 they are holding a national assembly in Genoa to mobilize for the international strike. In a release calling for the assembly, the USB wrote: “Dockworkers call for action. We refuse to collaborate with rearmament policies. We do not want the docks to be privatized and become a tool of the military. We do not want to work for war.

Dockworkers In Mediterranean Ports Call Feb. 6 Antiwar Strike

Against a backdrop of growing militarization in the old continent, dockworkers and port workers’ unions in Europe and the Mediterranean have launched an international call for strike action and mobilization. This day of protest, scheduled for Feb. 6, 2026, seeks to reject any compliance with the transport of weapons and war material, while strongly opposing the devastating consequences of the “war economy” on labor rights and peace. This initiative stems from the declaration signed by several unions on Sept. 26, 2025, in Genoa, entitled “Dockworkers and port workers do not work for war.”

Washington’s New War Front To Box In China And Turkiye

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s words earlier this month were a clear declaration that the relatively calm waters of the Eastern Mediterranean have become the front line in a wider geopolitical conflict. The threat that “Turkiye will strike first” was not only directed at Greece, Cyprus, or Israel, but at the new security architecture forming on the edge of the west, what can be called the “Mediterranean Arc.” This tripartite strategic partnership has evolved beyond a regional coalition countering Ankara’s ambitions. It now forms a critical node in a broader geopolitical constellation known as the Indo-Mediterranean Rim – the central stage of intensifying competition between the US and China across Eurasia and beyond.

Alarm Phone, The Hotline For People In Need Of Rescue

In early March, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU announced the activation of a never-before-used directive, authorising entry to the EU of an unlimited number of people fleeing disaster. Ukrainian refugees will have the right to reside and work in the EU for one year, extendable to three, a right that refugees fleeing other recent wars, such as those in Syria and Afghanistan, have been denied. It is not known how many people from these countries never reached European territory, having died in the attempt, drowned in the Mediterranean. Alarm Phone’s network of volunteers relies on two basic tools in its work to help prevent migrants and refugees from dying at sea.
