The Trump administration has embroiled the United States in another quagmire, similar to the Vietnam War and recent wars in the Middle East, by going to war against Iran. Now that the June 17th Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Iran is dead, the US and Iran seem to be stuck in a tit for tat war where the US bombs Iran and Iran retaliates against US and allies’ in the region. As Gulf States that are being targeted by Iran mount pressure on President Trump to stop the attacks, and a global economic crisis looms, the US is running out of options and time.

We Have Been There Before: The US-Iran MOU And The Algiers Accords

The Algiers Accords were signed at a time when Iran had the upper hand in dealing with the US. After many attempts at diplomacy failed to release the US personnel, the Carter administration launched “Operation Eagle Claw,” a covert military operation on April 24, 1980, aimed at rescuing its personnel in Tehran. The operation turned into a fiasco when severe weather in the Iranian desert city of Tabas and mechanical failures caused Jimmy Carter to abort the operation. Eight US service representatives died, one transport plane and one helicopter were destroyed in a collision, and five additional helicopters were either abandoned or captured by Iranian forces.

Iran Hits UAE Supertankers Amid ‘Ongoing’ Retaliation To US War

The Emirati government said on 14 July that two of its tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, as Tehran continued its “ongoing” retaliatory campaign in response to US escalation. “National tankers Mombasa and Al-Bahiyah were targeted by two Iranian cruise missiles while transiting the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, within Omani territorial waters,” said the UAE Defense Ministry.  An Indian crewmember was killed and eight others wounded on the Mombasa vessel, the ministry added. 

IRGC, Iranian Army Launch Regionwide Retaliation

Iran launched a large-scale wave of retaliatory military operations targeting Washington’s assets in Jordan, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain early on 12 July, following an overnight US escalation involving heavy strikes against the Islamic Republic.  The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the strikes as a response to the “aggression of the child-killing US army.” In several statements, the IRGC said its Aerospace Force struck the Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan, “destroying” its command-and-control center and MQ-9 drone hangars with ballistic missiles. 

US Issues ‘Ultimatum’ That Iran Commit To End Tanker Attacks In Hormuz

The US warned of "grave consequences" if Iran engages in "hostile" activity in the Strait of Hormuz, including targeting tankers transiting the strategic waterway, Al-Arabiya reported on 11 July, citing sources. Washington has also demanded a written commitment from Iran that it will not attack tankers in the strait again, according to informed sources who spoke with the Saudi news channel. A US official speaking with Axios said: “We want them to publicly say that they will stop shooting at ships and explicitly, or at least implicitly, acknowledge that they screwed up.”

US Begins Bombing Iran For The Second Night

US Central Command said on Wednesday that the US started bombing Iran again, marking the second night of US strikes, which came after President Trump said the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding was “over” and threatened more attacks. Iranian media reported explosions near several Iranian cities along the coast, including Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Konarak, and Chabahar, and said that Iranian air defenses are confronting “hostile targets.” Iran’s IRNA news agency reported that a firefighter was killed by US strikes that hit facilities at the Iranshahr airport in southeastern Iran.

President Trump said on Wednesday that the ceasefire and US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding are “over” and called Iranian leadership “scum” after the US bombed Iran again and the Iranian military hit back at US bases in the region. “To me, I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore. I think they’re scum,” the president told reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara while meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. “You know what scum is? They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people. And they’re vicious, violent people. And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” he added.

Qatar confirms No Iran–US talks In Doha Following Arrival Of Trump Envoys

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari announced on 30 June that no direct high-level sessions between US and Iranian officials are scheduled in Doha on Tuesday, following the arrival of US special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner were traveling to Doha for “high-level meetings” concerning the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran, however Ansari clarified the delegation would meet with Qatari mediators rather than Iranian representatives.

Iran Announces New Retaliatory Strikes On US Targets

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on 27 June that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy struck targets linked to US forces in response to US airstrikes along its southern coast. “In response to this act of aggression, the Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted the deployment sites of the US military in the region,” the statement said. Tehran condemned the US attacks, asserting that they  “constitute a blatant violation” of the UN Charter and a “clear breach” of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Iran and the US.

IRGC Quds Force Chief Issues New Warning To Israel

The chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, Esmail Qaani, issued a warning to Israel on 25 June, demanding that it withdraw its occupation forces from “all of Lebanon.”  “Let the Zionists know: those who have stood and fought against you Yazidis with the spirit of Ashura and the faith of Imam Hussein carry within them the same eternal belief that ‘Every day is Ashura and every land is Karbala,’” Qaani said on Thursday.  The comments came on the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, in which Shias mourn the killing of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, at the battle of Karbala in 680 AD. 

Iran Delays Swiss Meeting

The talks were set to take place in Switzerland on Friday under the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ signed between the US and Iran a day ago, after the two sides agreed on a 14-point accord on Monday. Under the deal, Washington and Tehran have agreed on a framework to end the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and negotiate on key issues within 60 days. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Baghaei outlined the procedural roadmap for the next phase of Iran-US talks, emphasizing that “necessary consultations” are already underway through intermediaries.

No Iran–US Nuclear Deal Unless Israel Withdraws From Lebanon

Hezbollah’s Media Relations Department said in a statement to Reuters and other outlets on 16 June that the Islamic Republic has assured it that there will be “no nuclear deal between Iran and the US” unless Israel withdraws its occupation forces from Lebanon. A full Israeli pullout will be the “result of” and “not a precondition for” the continuation of Iran–US talks following the signing of a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding (MoU), the department said. “[There will be] no nuclear deal between Iran and the US ​unless the ​Israelis withdraw,” Hezbollah added.

Pakistan To Host Signing Ceremony For Preliminary Iran–US Peace Deal

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on 15 June that his country will host a ceremony in Switzerland for the US and Iran to sign a preliminary peace agreement, bringing the three-month war between the two countries to an end. “The [signing] ceremony of this historic agreement will be held on Friday, 19 June, in Geneva, and by the grace of God, it will be hosted by Pakistan,” Sharif said while addressing a National Assembly session. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced on Sunday that the US and Iran had reached a preliminary agreement to end the war in the form of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
