Militancy

You Have To Shake Up The Status Quo

Marilyn Sneiderman has her baby pink Teamsters jacket framed on her living room wall. You’ve seen this kind of jacket before, if not in that color — satin with the big union logo on the back, the Teamster twin horse heads over a wagon wheel. But when Sneiderman was hired as the education director for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in the early 1990s, under the reform leadership of Ron Carey, she was one of few women in power. The pink jacket is, in a way, a symbol of her entire career in the labor movement.

The Hidden Story Of Britain’s Anti-Apartheid Militants

At an East London cinema last summer, several dozen people in their late sixties and early seventies took to the stage. After being beckoned forwards by the compere, the veteran South African revolutionary Ronnie Kasrils, the shying group of mostly retirees received repeated standing ovations from loved ones, politicians, and diplomats filling out the private screening. Afterward, they chatted at the cinema bar and signed pamphlets and books, while their proud children and grandchildren took selfies with the actors who had portrayed their family members in the film they had just enjoyed.

UPS Teamsters Union Struggle Is Critical For All Workers

340,000 workers, members of the Teamsters Union, worked tirelessly during the worst of the COVID pandemic. Despite exhaustion from overwork, disease, and family tragedies, they saved lives by delivering packages to those quarantined. Meanwhile, bosses at UPS lived in luxury as profits soared to $56.3 billion from 2019 to 2023. In 2023 alone, UPS says it will spend $3 billion in stock buybacks and $5.4 billion in dividends. Every penny of that profit is due to the labor of the workers. The current contract expires in less than five weeks. Every day the company delays making a realistic offer to the union, the closer workers come to a strike authorized by 97% of the rank-and-file who voted.
