Before ICE Shooting, Immigration Agents Repeatedly Used Deadly Force

When an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday, it was not the first time that federal officers have killed civilians since the Trump administration launched its aggressive immigration enforcement campaign. Federal officers have fatally shot at least three other people in the last five months, according to news reports reviewed by The Marshall Project. In September, Silverio Villegas González, a father originally from Mexico who worked as a cook, was killed while reportedly trying to flee from officers in a Chicago suburb, WBEZ reported.

A former US military policeman who investigated the killing of US-Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqla says an Israeli soldier deliberately shot her, but his superiors at the State Department changed the conclusions of his report to claim the killing was unintentional, the New York Times (NYT) reported on 27 October. Abu Aqla was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier in Jenin in the West Bank in May 2022 while reporting for Al Jazeera on clashes between the Israeli army and Palestinian resistance forces. Israel initially claimed that Palestinian fighters had killed Abu Aqla, but belatedly apologized for her death a full year later.

Mexico is in shock. In the span of just a few days, the lifeless body of a seven-year-old girl, kidnapped after being abducted from school, was found. Then the body of another young girl, tortured and murdered, was discovered. The number of women murdered every day is 10. The news of these recent killings was like a bomb had been dropped. It placed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in a political and social crisis, as he has always considered this issue to be secondary, refusing to respond to the demands of thousands of women who have been mobilized for more than a year against violence and murder.
