Christchurch Happens Every Day In The War On Terror

As we mourn the victims of the terrorist atrocity in New Zealand -- where at least 50 Muslim worshippers were mowed down by a white supremacist partially "inspired" by Donald Trump -- many are looking for answers to the inevitable questions of why and how. To answer those questions, and explore how we might prevent such terrorist acts, it may be helpful to recognize that what happened at Christchurch -- mass murder produced as the logical result of a long-running political epoch that is almost singularly defined by the dehumanization and demonization of Muslims, Arabs, and anyone perceived as such -- happens every day.

L.A. Program Targets Muslims Under Guise Of National Security

The city’s Countering Violent Extremism program is drawing fire from many quarters. Exactly one week after the Supreme Court upheld the Trump administration’s Muslim Ban, dozens of Los Angeles residents descended upon City Hall to urge lawmakers to reject nearly $500,000 for a Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program that would target Muslims under the guise of national security. Just days before, a coalition of civil rights and community groups filed a lawsuit against the city for failing to release documents about its CVE programs in response to a California Public Records Act request (similar to the federal Freedom of Information Act).

Muslim Groups Awarded Damages Over Discriminatory NYPD Surveillance

“We have been down similar roads before. Jewish Americans during the Red Scare, African Americans during the civil rights movement, and Japanese Americans during World War II are examples that readily spring to mind.” The New York Police Department reached a settlement with Muslim-owned businesses, mosques, student groups, and others it subjected to discriminatory and suspicionless surveillance. As part of the settlement, businesses and mosques that were spied upon by the NYPD will receive damages for income lost as a result of the stigma and humiliation they suffered “for being targeted on the basis of their religion.” The settlement marks the culmination of a lawsuit, Hassan v. City of New York, that was filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and Muslim Advocates in 2012, following several Pulitzer Prize-winning reports from the Associated Press on surveillance against Muslim Americans by the NYPD.

The Legacy of Malcolm X

By Ahmed Shawki for Jacobin. After his visit to Africa, Malcolm began to argue that the black struggle in the United States was part of an international struggle, one that he connected to the struggle against capitalism and imperialism. He also began to argue in favor of socialism. Referring to the African states, he pointed out, “All of the countries that are emerging today from under the shackles of colonialism are turning towards socialism.” He no longer defined the struggle for black liberation as a racial conflict. “We are living in an era of revolution, and the revolt of the American Negro is part of the rebellion against the oppression and colonialism which has characterized this era,” he said. “It is incorrect to classify the revolt of the Negro as simply a racial conflict of black against white, or as purely an American problem. Rather, we are today seeing a global rebellion of the oppressed against the oppressor, the exploited against the exploiters.”

If Americans Cared About Muslims, Stop Supporting Their Killing

By Glen Ford for Black Agenda Report - In the most dramatic expression of insider opposition to a sitting administration’s policies in generations, over 1,000 U.S. State Department employees signed on to a memo protesting President Donald Trump’s temporary ban on people from seven predominantly Muslim countries setting foot on U.S. soil. Another recent high point in dissent among the State Department’s 18,000 worldwide employees occurred in June of last year, when 51 diplomats called for U.S. air strikes against the Syrian government of President Bashar al Assad. Neither outburst of dissent was directed against the U.S. wars and economic sanctions that have killed and displaced millions of people in the affected countries

Mayors And Activists Revolt Against Trump’s “Muslim Ban” Executive Order

By John Knefel for Truthout - Ever since November 8, 2016, when Donald Trump was elected, Thania Hussain has gone to nearly every protest organized in New York City. Wednesday night in Washington Square Park was no different. Hussain, an undergraduate student at Fordham University, was one of thousands of people who came to take part in a protest organized by Muslim groups in response to President Donald Trump's proposed de facto ban on Muslims entering the United States. "Every time I come out [to protests] I see the same sentiments," Hussain told me in an interview following the event. "Everyone wants social justice and equality for all. People don't care if you have a headscarf. It's wonderful."

Supreme Court Argument In Case On Muslim Round-Ups

By Staff of Center for Constitutional Rights - In the shadow of the Trump inauguration this Friday, CCR will be before the Supreme Court on Wednesday in a case about executive abuses of power that is frighteningly relevant at the dawn of the Trump era. Ziglar v. Abassi (formerly Turkmen v. Ashcroft) seeks to hold high-level Bush administration officials, including John Ashcroft, accountable for their role in the round up, detention, and abuse of Muslim non-citizens after 9/11. After 9/11, more than 700 men were rounded up and imprisoned for months, dozens in brutal conditions, based on nothing more than their race or religion. They came to the attention of the FBI through citizen reports about such things as "Arabs" working long hours or "Middle Eastern" men renting post office boxes.

Obama Dismantles Framework Targeting Muslims And Iranians

By Staff of NIAC Action - Washington, DC – NIAC Action applauds the Obama Administration’s decision to officially terminate the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), the post-9/11 program that tracked and discriminated against immigrants from predominately Muslim nations, including Iran. “This is a major victory for communities who fear they will be targeted in the Trump era,” said NIAC Action Executive Director Jamal Abdi. “Dismantling the NSEERS framework ensures that Donald Trump will not inherit a nascent program to track and register immigrants from Muslim-majority countries.”

Muslims Waste No Time Building Opposition To Trump’s Proposed Registry

By Sarah Aziza for Waging Nonviolence - With just over a month to go before the inauguration of Donald Trump, Muslim activists are working to block the president-elect’s long-standing pledge to crack down on their community. Trump has proposed banning Muslims from entering the United States, voiced his support for the surveillance of mosques and has indicated he will create a nationwide registry of Muslim individuals. On Monday, 200 Muslims and allies in Washington, D.C. marched from the Department of Justice to the White House, bearing signs reading “No Muslim Registry, Not Now, Not Ever” and “End the War on Islam,”...

Civil Rights Groups To Obama: Dismantle ‘Muslim Registry’ Now

By Anne Meador for DC Media Group - About 150 people marched to the White House today to ask President Obama to rescind a program dormant since 2011. The program, which registered foreigners from mostly Muslim countries, was created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and used to deport thousands of people. The protesters are concerned about the potential for President-elect Trump to use the program, called the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), to register and deport Muslims. The demonstration, organized by MoveOn.org, Desis Rising Up & Moving (DRUM), the ACLU and many others, comes soon before President-elect Doanld Trump takes office.

Open Letter: We Refuse To Be Enemies

By Omar Scott Antar. We Refuse To Be Enemies is a coalition of Jews, Muslims, and Christians in Connecticut, committed to peace and justice, and particularly focused on the Middle East. The NYPD-CIA, in their highly politicized, discriminatory, and illegal operations, target not only Muslims, but also left-wing activists. Because Ivanka M. Trump, daughter and advisor of President-elect Donald J. Trump, is on board of the NYC Police Foundation (page 124 of 128), the NYPD’s slush fund, which finances the NYPD-CIA’s International Liaison Programs (ILPs), it is little wonder Trump approves of and extols the NYPD-CIA and its abusive former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Donald Trump also calls for explicit profiling of Muslims, approvingly citing the NYPD-CIA programs and less free foreign countries, such as France and Israel.

Judge Calls For Additional Safeguards In NYPD Surveillance Rules

BY Staff of ACLU - NEW YORK - In a legal challenge to the New York City Police Department’s surveillance of American Muslims, a federal judge issued a ruling calling for alterations to a landmark lawsuit settlement as a condition of approving the settlement. The alterations proposed by the judge would further strengthen the settlement’s ability to protect New York Muslims and others from discriminatory and unjustified surveillance.

4 Million Muslims Killed In Western Wars: Should We Call It Genocide?

By Kit O'Connell for Mint Press News - AUSTIN, Texas — It may never be possible to know the true death toll of the modern Western wars on the Middle East, but that figure could be 4 million or higher. Since the vast majority of those killed were of Arab descent, and mostly Muslim, when would it be fair to accuse the United States and its allies of genocide? A March report by Physicians for Social Responsibility calculates the body count of the Iraq War at around 1.3 million, and possibly as many as 2 million. However, the numbers of those killed in Middle Eastern wars could be much higher.

College Students Support Professor On Leave For Views

By Ehab Zahriyeh for Aljazeera - Dozens of students at Wheaton College in suburban Chicago protested on Monday against the school's move to terminate an associate professor who said Christians and Muslims worship the same God — a statement she made while wearing a hijab to show solidarity with women who face Islamophobia. Students filled the steps of the school's Edman Memorial Chapel chanting "Reinstate Doc Hawk," a nickname for Larycia Hawkins. The Protestant evangelical college said in a Jan. 5 statement on its website that its provost had begun a process for terminating her.

The Best Response To Inhumanity Is Humanity

By Matthew Johnson for Popular Resistance. Dear Westerners: Muslims and Islam are not the enemy of the West. I wish this statement was without controversy, but with the rising tide of Islamophobia (i.e. irrational fear of Muslims) in the United States and elsewhere, it is clear that it is not. There are many out there who cling tightly to the 'Clash of Civilizations' propaganda or otherwise insist that there is a notable difference between Islam and other religions, Muslims and the rest of us, and so on. I deplore you to reject this falsehood in the spirit of the holidays and think beyond your immediate family to the human family, which includes more than a billion Muslims who are not going anywhere.
