Civil society groups marched in solidarity with Niger’s military government on Sunday, August 30, after the army suppressed a mutiny overnight at the country’s main air base in the capital, Niamey, restoring normalcy by Saturday morning. Gunfire and explosions were also heard at some sensitive military sites in Niamey after the mutiny began around 20 minutes past midnight, with a group of soldiers confining other soldiers to their barracks and holding them hostage in the military base 101. The base is located in the compound of the Diori Hamani International Airport, about a kilometer away from civilian infrastructure.

Recent reports indicate a serious mutiny situation aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Seven U.S. Navy personnel have possibly been killed and several others injured in a violent clash among the crew, highlighting growing unrest and morale issues during an extended deployment. Worried families vented their anxieties about loved ones onboard the Lincoln at an emotional town hall meeting with navy leaders in San Diego last Thursday, Stars and Stripes reported. One spouse among the 200 or so family members said that her husband had texted her that day saying “he hopes he doesn’t wake up tomorrow”.

On March 14, we carried out our revolutionary hijacking. That’s what we called it. We had now captured the bridge. We had a skeleton crew of about a dozen, enough to operate the ship for a short period. I had the second mate show me our position on the charts. This gave me the general direction and everything. The engines kicked back in and we maintained our route. The radio operator couldn’t use the equipment without our hearing him. We demanded  radio silence for two days. I followed the radar immediately to see if there were any other ships around.
