Delhi—Protesters occupying the central parts of Delhi, India were triumphant on Saturday evening after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government accepted all demands raised by the movement’s leaders, including the resignation of the country’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest was spearheaded by the newly formed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)—a wordplay on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The word “cockroach” is attributed to the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who in May referred to the youth of the country as “cockroaches” during a court hearing.

US President Donald Trump is a very contradictory leader. He constantly implements policies that go against his stated goals. The perfect example of this is how Trump has treated BRICS, the Global South-led organization that now represents the majority of the planet. Trump sees BRICS as a major threat to US hegemony, and, in particular, the dominance of the US dollar as the global reserve currency. The US president has openly threatened members of BRICS to try to stop them from seeking alternatives to the dollar. In a press conference at the White House on July 8, Trump complained (emphasis added): BRICS was set up to hurt us. BRICS was set up to degenerate our dollar, and take our dollar as the standard, take it off as the standard.

Progressive groups in India held a national day of protest against Israel’s grave violations of the ceasefire in Gaza. The protestors also demanded the Indian government take a more assertive stand on the issue and stop indirectly aiding Israel’s criminal activities. The day of action was organized by the Palestine Solidarity Organization, a platform with participation from most of the left parties as well as student, women, and trade union organizations. The central protest was organized in New Delhi where participants carried posters and banners denouncing Israel’s continued genocide in Gaza.

Scores of women held candlelight vigils in support of over a hundred farmer leaders arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in India on Tuesday, December 10. The protesting women warned authorities against intimidating the families of the farmers and demanded the immediate release of all those detained. The vigils took place in villages near New Delhi, where farmers have been agitating for months. Their demands include proper compensation for land acquired for the development of large townships, the return of 10% of developed lands to those affected, and adequate rehabilitation for families who have lost their only source of income under the Land Acquisition Act of 2013.

The National Democratic Alliance, the coalition that the BJP leads, was to win more than 400 seats in a Lok Sabha that has 545 seats. The ruling right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing a united challenge from the center-left alliance led by the Congress Party across the country. The BJP’s battles in these last two phases of the elections are proving to be even more fierce due to the organized popular resentment against its farm policies in the region. Significant parts of the states polling in these two final phases, the state of Haryana with 10 seats in the Lok Sabha and Punjab with 13 seats, have been the epicenter of the ongoing farmers’ agitation.
