The Common Dreams headline: "Millions of Americans Joining the Ranks of the Uninsured Thanks to Trump-GOP Cuts in 2025." (That is, cuts to Medicaid, and the end of premium subsidies for ACA Marketplace plans.) The sub-heading: "New data released by KFF underscores how 'universal, seamless coverage throughout the life course remains an urgent prerogative for the nation' said one physician and advocate." The physician advocate is Dr. Adam Gaffney, former president of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), who is further quoted as calling "abhorrent" the fact that an estimated 25 million Americans are uninsured.

During my years in the emergency department, I have seen the awful impacts of delayed care. When I practiced at Michael Reese Hospital many years ago, it was distressingly common for me to treat young men with kidney failure. Why? Because their high blood pressure went untreated due to a lack of health coverage to pay for doctor visits and simple medications. They waited until their health issues became unbearable—and much more expensive to treat. We can do so much better than this, and growing numbers of Americans—including 90% of Democrats in a recent Gallup poll—are starting to demand that we replace our “starter home” with a much more durable health care system.

On Saturday, May 31, people across the United States rallied as part of the first National Day of Action organized by National Single Payer to demand Health, not Profit: Put National Single Payer on the Nation's Agenda. A national single payer healthcare system would cover every person living in the United States and its territories from birth to death and provide comprehensive coverage, including all medically necessary care, medications and therapies, and longterm care. The reality that healthcare in the US is designed to provide profits for the medical-industrial complex rather than protecting people's health has spurred a growing coalition of organizations to take action together.

Since 2004, the Commonwealth Fund has compared health system performance among wealthy nations. The U.S. consistently ranks dead last. Why is the U.S. such an outlier, when the solution, a national single payer system, free from profit, would save lives and money? Dr. Margaret Flowers, renowned single payer activist and humanist, was one of the 13 single payer activists, doctors, and nurses arrested at the Senate Finance Committee meeting in 2009, when the U.S. attempted to reform the health care system and came up with the Affordable Care Act.
