Striking Oxfam Workers Stage ‘Big Head’ Action

Striking Oxfam Canada workers staged a “Big Head” protest on July 8 as their strike surpassed its fourth week. The “Big Head” action is an Oxfam speciality, according to Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 2722 president Lisa Gunn. The protest action involves making a giant sculpture of a leader’s head and using it to draw attention to and expose the misdeeds of the person depicted. “Usually it’s leaders of the G20 or the large presidents, prime ministers of the U.S., Canada, France and other big, powerful countries. It’s a way to draw attention to the demands that Oxfam asks at these things, which are all around equality, justice and gender rights,” Gunn said in an interview with rabble.ca.

Rights groups and charities gathered outside the Royal Courts of Justice on Tuesday to support a legal challenge against the UK government's continuing export of F-35 fighter jet parts for use by Israel. Holding Palestinian flags and signs calling on the government to “stop arming Israel”, dozens of campaigners joined the lawyers leading the case to demand an end to all UK arms exports to the country as its war in Gaza enters its 20th month with more than 52,000 Palestinians killed. Groups present at the protest included Palestinian rights group Al-Haq, which bought forward the current case with the support of the Global Action Legal Network (GLAN), Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Oxfam.

The world’s richest 1% own 43% of global financial assets, and the wealth of the top five billionaires has doubled since 2020, while 60% of humanity – nearly 5 billion people – collectively got poorer, according to a report by Oxfam, a leading international humanitarian organization. Oxfam published the study, “Inequality Inc.”, to coincide with the World Economic Forum meeting of corporate oligarchs and Western government officials in Davos, Switzerland this January. The five richest people on Earth in 2023 were Elon Musk, Bernard Arnault, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, and Warren Buffett. Their combined wealth skyrocketed from $340 billion in 2020 to $869 billion just three years later.
