On June 28, the Reclaim Pride Coalition held their 8th annual Queer Liberation March (QLM): a two-mile march from Union Square to Foley Square. The march was established in 2019 in response to New York City’s increasingly corporatized Pride Parade. While more than a million people attended the mainstream Heritage Pride Parade down Fifth Avenue Sunday afternoon, the thousands of marchers who gathered at Union Square presented a much different scene. There were no corporate floats, no police barricades, and little of the spectacle that defines Manhattan’s official Pride Parade.

For A Pride Against Capitalism, Imperialism, And The Far Right

Pride has its roots in the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City, when the LGBTQ+ community, Black and Latino youth, and trans and gender-nonconforming people fought back against police brutality, state harassment, and the criminalization of their lives. This year, we must honor this spirit, recognizing that the fight for sexual and gender liberation is part of the international struggle to overthrow the exploitative and oppressive capitalist system. In recent decades, the crisis of neoliberalism has led governments across the world to attack the living conditions of the working majority, all while ramping up its imperialist wars and plunder.

Four years ago, SLL’s 2022 Pride Month statement called on the workers and oppressed to “Resist the capitalist ‘trans panic’ strategy.” We wrote then: “The only way fascist movements have ever been defeated is by people uniting and fighting back. “It is not enough to rely on elections or hope that friendly politicians will save us. They won’t. The Democratic Party is tied by a million threads to the same capitalist class that demands these anti-people measures.” The campaign of demonization has only intensified since then. For the past 18 months, Donald Trump’s regime has been steadily putting in place all of the infrastructure, legal and otherwise, to make it impossible for trans people to exist in public, and to justify the dehumanization and extermination of trans lives on a mass scale.

This is part of a growing assault, fueled by the corporate media, on transgender existence. This Pride Month, There Is Hope In Fighting Back

This Pride Month comes amid a rising wave of anti-trans policies across the country. Over 500 anti-trans bills have been proposed in the past year, state after state is banning gender affirming care for trans minors, and many are beginning to also severely limit it for trans adults. With the recent presidential announcement of Florida governor Ron DeSantis, it’s clear that these anti-trans politics aren’t going anywhere soon. Right-wingers are harassing and attacking queer people, corporations are abandoning even the most self-serving attempts at inclusion, and the response from the Biden Administration has been limited to paying the most insultingly insufficient lip service.

More Than 530 Anti-LGBTQ Bills Have Been Proposed Across The Country

Several different legislative trackers have noted that, in the first five months of this year leading up to Pride Month, which began on June 1, hundreds of anti-LGBTQ bills have been proposed in statehouses across the country, with dozens of them passing. A tracker managed by Erin Reed, a transgender journalist and activist who provides daily updates on LGBTQ-focused legislation (both negative and positive bills), found that more than 530 anti-LGBTQ bills have been drafted and proposed in state legislatures and in Congress. Of those bills, which were submitted between January 1 and May 31, 68 have been enacted into law, with only 122 officially failing so far.

To Fight Far Right Attacks We Must Reclaim The Radical Legacy Of Pride

Attacks on trans people are continuing to become more prevalent and more vicious. Not only are there currently more than 150 bills making their way through state legislatures that specifically target trans people, but the far right, aligned with certain sectors of the feminist movement, are also becoming more and more explicit in their calls for a eugenics campaign against trans people, with the end goal of as few trans people in existence as possible. One Twitter user, echoing language used by Tucker Carlson, even called for a “post-Weimar cleanup” of “degenerates.” The most common types of anti-trans legislation currently being proposed at the state level are bills that restrict trans youth’s access to gender-affirming healthcare and those that restrict trans youth’s ability to participate in sports.

Inspiration From Argentina For The Trans Rights Movement

This Pride month is a one of great fear and grief for many. After decades of (slowly) advancing queer rights, we are in the midst of the worst backlash we’ve seen in years. Laws are being passed across the country that dramatically roll back queer rights and specifically target trans children. These policies being put forward by far-right politicians would (in effect) forcibly detransition and socially isolate trans children, and in many cases they are already being used to attack the lives of trans people. These attacks are in direct contradiction with supposed ideas about progress that many of us have been told for years. This can have a demoralizing effect, making us feel as if struggling for our rights is futile, since the right wing seems so much more powerful than we are.
