Prisoner Exchange

Russia, Ukraine Agree On Prisoner Swap But No Progress On Ceasefire

Russian and Ukrainian officials held a second round of direct talks in Istanbul on Monday and agreed to move forward on another prisoner swap, but did not appear to make any progress toward a ceasefire or lasting peace deal as the two sides remain very far apart. Russia and Ukraine agreed to return the bodies of more than 12,000 soldiers, and up to 1,200 POWs from each side could also be exchanged. Each side released 1,000 POWs following the first round of talks in mid-May. During the talks on Monday, which lasted about an hour, Russia presented its terms for a peace deal, which include Ukrainian troops withdrawing from territory in the four oblasts Moscow annexed in 2022.

Third Prisoner Exchange Takes Place Amid Israeli Condemnation

The handover of three Israeli captives and five Thai nationals to the Red Cross began today in Gaza following the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, marking the third batch of captives to be handed over since the ceasefire took effect on January 19. In accordance with the terms of the deal, the Israeli captives were exchanged for over 110 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, including those sentenced to life in prison or serving long sentences. The handover took place today in two different locations — in Jabalia in north Gaza, and Khan Younis in the south. The Israeli captives were Agam Berger, Arbel Yehoud, and Gadi Moses.

How The Campaign To Free Venezuelan Political Prisoner Alex Saab Succeeded

Alex Saab was freed from US captivity in what Venezuelan Prof. Maria Victor Paez described as “a triumph of Venezuelan diplomacy.” The diplomat had been imprisoned for trying to bring humanitarian supplies to Venezuela in legal international trade but in circumvention of Washington’s illegal economic coercive measures, also known as sanctions. In a prisoner exchange, Venezuela released ten US citizens and some other nationals to free Alex Saab after his over three years of imprisonment. Saab’s plane landed in Venezuela on December 20. He was tearfully greeted by his family, friends, and Venezuela’s primera combatiente Cilia Flores, wife of the president.

Venezuela Secures Release Of Government Envoy Alex Saab

Venezuela successfully negotiated the release of Alex Saab, a government envoy who spent more than three years detained. Saab landed in Caracas on Wednesday afternoon and was greeted by his family and Venezuelan government officials. His release comes as a result of a negotiation between the Nicolás Maduro government and the Joe Biden administration that will see the release of up to 36 people, 10 of them US citizens, currently detained in Venezuela. The Maduro government envoy was arrested during a refueling stopover in Cape Verde in June 2020 on his way to Iran to negotiate food and fuel import deals amidst US sanctions.
