Firefighters are fighting a massive fire at a plastics warehouse of Peoples Cartage in Parkersburg, West Virginia, while the surrounding community has been made to shelter in place as the state and federal governments monitor the air for noxious smoke. West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey declared a State of Emergency for Wood County as pitch black plumes of smoke were seen across the Mid-Ohio Valley. The specific cause of the fire is reportedly not yet known, but there is strong evidence that Peoples Cartage neglected safety problems.

After stealing hundreds of billions of dollars from taxpayers, insurance companies in the Medicare Advantage program are going to face significant government action. And significant government action, in this case, means that the federal government is going to award an estimated $13 billion to the insurers in bonus payments. These bonuses are not officially a direct reward for insurance companies exploiting taxpayers, but they are emblematic of a completely broken system. Quality bonuses in the Medicare Advantage program are meant to reward insurers for providing high-quality plans to seniors and others who qualify for Medicare.

Pennsylvanians Are Beating Back A Wave Of Water System Privatization

In January, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court blocked the corporate takeover of a public water system in Chester, Pennsylvania. After a nine-year battle, the court ruled that Chester, a town of 33,000 outside Philadelphia, does not have the jurisdiction to sell the local municipal water system to Aqua, a massive company that owns water and sewer systems throughout the state. The ruling came in the wake of major public pushback, with hundreds of residents joining state legislators at public hearings to oppose the sale. Save Chester Water Authority, a grassroots campaign, warned: “In every acquisition it has made, [Aqua] hikes up water bills through rapid-fire rate increases and infrastructure surcharges.”

The latest report submitted by Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, lists 48 corporations and institutions, including Palantir Technologies Inc., Lockheed Martin, Alphabet Inc., Amazon, International Business Machine Corporation (IBM), Caterpillar Inc., Microsoft Corporation and Massachusetts Institue of Technology (MIT), along with banks and financial firms such as Blackrock, insurers, real estate firms and charities, which in violation of international law are making billions from the occupation and the genocide of Palestinians.

Privatization of publicly funded Medicare and Medicaid, managed care, and “value-based payment”1 have failed to reduce cost or improve population health despite over 30 years of trying, and a new paradigm for health policy is needed. Public funding is appropriate for essential public services necessary for everyone—funded by taxes and paid for with budgets based on cost of operations, with no opportunity for profit or loss. Examples include police and fire departments, public schools, the military, roads and bridges, and government services. Health care should be added to this list. Other industrialized countries with far more cost-effective universal systems treat health care as a public good, not a commodity.
