‘Militarization Of Rules And Minds’ In Europe Threatens Workers And Welfare

The militarization of Europe is advancing rapidly, with everything from public budgets to media narratives increasingly shaped by a war-driven logic. This was one of the key warnings raised by trade unionists, left politicians, and peace activists during a discussion organized by the International Peace Bureau and the No to War – No to NATO network. At the level of the European Union, Belgian MEP Marc Botenga warned that existing rules and safeguards are being pushed aside to accelerate the new military-industrial strategy. He pointed to recent discussions around so-called omnibus legislative packages, particularly proposals designed to ease the operations of the arms industry at the expense of labor rights, environmental protections, and social welfare systems.

Italian Workers Strike Against War And Militarization

The Italian grassroots trade union Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) launched a general strike on Friday, June 20, to escalate national mobilization against armament and war. Echoing a slogan from broader peace campaigns – “Abbassate le armi, alzate i salari” (“Lower the weapons, raise the wages”) – striking workers aiming to expose the consequences of Europe’s, and more specifically Italy’s, growing military-industrial agenda, including more cuts in the region’s public services. “This is a strike against war and rearmament, but also against the devastating militarization of the economy and society,” USB stated ahead of the strike.

Because the present we face is repulsive.” With these words, Marta Collot began her speech at Potere al Popolo’s national assembly in Rome on March 15, marking the culmination of months of organizing and political discussion. The assembly launched a new program, developed through a bottom-up process rooted in labor and territorial struggles, outlined to serve as a framework for truly organizing the future. According to Maurizio Coppola, a member of Potere al Popolo’s national coordination, the process was launched for multiple reasons.
