60+ Organizations In Palestine Demand Release Of Flotilla Activists

More than 60 civil society organizations in Palestine issued a statement demanding the immediate release of detained Global Sumud Flotilla activists, reiterating their appreciation of the flotilla campaign, and calling for more solidarity action. The statement is deeply valued by campaigners seeking to free Palestine. It is reminiscent of the encouragement of international solidarity offered by the African National Congress and its allies when they were seeking to abolish apartheid in South Africa. The South Africans valued the solidarity actions on college campuses and by religious, civil rights, and legal organizations, unions, and activist employees of corporations doing business in apartheid South Africa as crucial to isolating that apartheid regime.

Italian Dockworkers Call For A Strike on May 18

With a video published on Thursday, May 7 and a a press release on Friday, May 8, the Grassroots Trade Union (Unione Sindacale di Base, USB) and the Italian Port Workers Collective (Collettivo Autonomo Lavoratori Portuali, CALP) which organizes dockworkers in the port of Genoa, among others, called for a general strike on May 18 to demand the release of Global Sumud Flotilla co-organizers Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Ávila, and to denounce the complicity of the Italian government in their abduction and in the genocide in Gaza.

Nothing illustrates the inversion of the international and moral order more than the genocide in Gaza and the shipment of tens of billions of dollars of weapons to Israel by Western nations, especially the United States, to sustain it. Part of this inversion is the unrelenting persecution of those who denounce the genocide — especially those who risk their lives to halt it and demand the rule of law. But the rule of law, it appears, is buried under the rubble in Gaza. And because of that Israel is able, with barely a word of protest by Western nations – Spain being one of the few exceptions – to abduct 175 activists aboard Sumud Flotilla 500 nautical miles from Gaza and 80 nautical miles west of the Greek island of Crete.
