Automatic Draft Registration Undoes A Victory Decades In The Making

Young people in the U.S. have won a major unsung victory: Starting in December, they will no longer be required to register or report their addresses for a possible military draft. But Congress has given the agency tasked with “readiness” for a draft a second chance to find a way to sign young men up for a future draft involuntarily and “automatically.” To understand how this victory was won and how young people and their allies can fight the plan for “automatic” registration, we need to look at 45 years of forgotten history of draft registration and resistance during a time when there was no active draft.

As Congress Automates The Draft, It’s Time To End The Selective Service System

Buried in the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is a provision to automatically register all males at the age of 18 with the Selective Service System (SSS) that, if not stopped, will go into effect this December. Clearing the FOG speaks with Edward Hasbrouck of Resisters.info. Hasbrouck was a draft resister in the early 1980's who was sent to prison for refusing to register. He discusses how a small number of resisters, who were willing to speak out, proved that the government could not enforce a draft. He adds that this new effort will similarly fail and how we can abolish the system altogether, and stop the United States' endless wars.

FAQ On The Draft, Draft Registration, And Draft Resistance

Decades of quiet and spontaneous but widespread and sustained noncompliance by young men in the U.S. with the requirement to register with the Selective Service System (SSS) within 30 days of their 18th birthday, and to and to report within 10 days each time they change their address until their 26th birthday, have rendered the registration database less than useless for an actual draft. The success of draft registration resistance in preventing a draft is one of the most significant ongoing victories of nonviolent direct action against war and for youth liberation. But that victory remains incomplete.

Automatic Registration For Draft Begins In December; How To Resist

Eligible men will automatically be registered into the military draft pool by December as part of an effort to streamline the previous process of self-registration and save money. The Selective Service System (SSS) — the government agency that maintains a database of men to be called up to serve in the case of a national emergency — submitted a proposed rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30, according to the office’s website. Most men between the ages of 18 and 25 are already required to register with the Selective Service, but automatic registration was mandated in December 2025 as part of the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.

House And Senate Agree To Make Draft Registration ‘Automatic’

An amendment to the Military Selective Service Act to direct the Selective Service System (SSS) to try to register all potential draftees in the USA automatically has been included in the version of this year’s military authorization bill agreed to by a House-Senate conference committee and likely to be enacted into law within the next few weeks. This doesn’t mean that a draft is being activated right away, or that any or all of those “automatically” registered will be sent induction orders – although preparing to do so is the sole purpose of registration with or by the SSS.
