US Officials Boast Their Illegal Sanctions ‘Collapsed’ Iran’s Economy

Donald Trump has openly called for “regime change” in Iran. He has surrounded the country with what he calls a “massive armada”, and has suggested that he wants to kill Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While Trump threatens to bomb Iran again, after attacking it in 2025, the US government has been dropping devastating economic bombs on the nation. Top US government officials boast that they are trying to “collapse” Iran’s economy. The Trump administration is waging what it calls a “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran, which the White House says is “aimed at driving Iran’s oil exports to zero”.

Iranian Intelligence Seizes US-Made Weapons, Explosives

Iranian intelligence has announced the seizure of guns, ammunition, and over 200 kilograms of explosives from foreign-backed cells that participated in the instigation of riots across the country. Many of these arms are US-built weapons that were seized from “militants” who had hidden them in homes across Iran, the Intelligence Ministry said on 13 January. State television also reported that several “terrorist groups” linked to Israel were detained in the southeastern city of Zahedan. According to Sepah News, armed groups linked to Israel – which recently infiltrated Iran through its eastern borders – were dismantled in a joint operation by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) ground force, police, and intelligence forces in Zahedan.

With nuclear negotiations between the Trump administration and Iran’s Reformist government at a standstill, I held two separate, lengthy background conversations in Tehran this past week with a pair of seasoned Iranian diplomats with detailed knowledge of the talks in Muscat, Oman. Like most Iranians, the diplomats were eager for a durable deal that would provide sanctions relief. But they said their side could not seem to break through to a Trump team they described as dithering, divided, distracted by other conflicts, and incapable of holding to a consistent position. Worse, as the negotiations drag on, the Trump administration is defaulting toward the hardline Israeli position which rejects all uranium enrichment, even for civilian purposes, violating a right Tehran considers sacrosanct.
