Transition Towns

Transition Towns Are Key To Degrowth; Current Movements Are Too Reformist

Resources are dwindling, including minerals, timber, water, and soils. Almost all ecosystems are being damaged, including the atmosphere, oceans, and forests. Species are being lost at an alarming rate. Seven of the nine major “planetary boundaries” impacts have now exceeded safe levels. The World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) “Footprint” measure shows that Australians today are using five to seven times the per capita amount of productive land that would be available to all in 2050. Then there are the social and cultural effects. Inequality is rising, and social cohesion is decaying.

Transition As A Social Technology

After nearly two decades deeply engaged in this field, the organizing model developed by the international Transition Towns Movement is still the most holistic, accessible, and effective social technology I’ve found for cultivating more resilient, equitable, sustainable, and regenerative local communities from the bottom up. Based on the experience of thousands of Transition groups worldwide, it’s an open-source methodology that anyone can pick up, use, and adapt to their community’s needs, interests, opportunities, and culture, regardless of whether or not they consider themselves part of the Transition Movement.

Evergreening Transition Training

Dear friends and fellow Transitioners, I hope you’ll join me today in celebrating the launch of Transition Network International’s first-ever “evergreen” course, Transition Launch Training! This self-paced and self-directed online version of our most popular training is now available for anyone, anywhere, to take for free at any time. It’s the product of 12 experienced Transition Trainers working together across nine countries and three continents over the past eight months, and having coordinated its development, I’m really proud of how it turned out.

Young People And Transition: Making Space At The Table

Young people today find themselves on the front line of a rapidly changing world. Whether actively engaged with climate issues or not, these issues will undoubtedly and profoundly shape their futures, quality of life and inner worlds. Witnessing the escalating environmental crisis unfold in real time alongside their personal growth and development, can make these challenges feel overwhelming. With 84% of young people aged 16-25 in the UK worried about climate change and 59% reporting that it affects their daily lives (The Lancet Planetary Health, 2020) it’s crucial that movements such as Transition strive to place young people at their heart, building supportive and empowering pathways to navigate these turbulent times together.

Why Transition? And Why Now?

There is a lot to keep us awake at night. War, signs of environmental collapse, rising inequality. Then there’s the countless personal daily worries demanding our attention – bills; stressful work; children and elders needing support; getting the healthcare we need. It can be an overwhelming mix, inducing anxiety and making our world feel unstable and insecure. Burying your head in the sand, and narrowing your focus to what you can control in your own household or shopping basket seems like a perfectly rational response. Then this summer, many communities were rocked by racist violence and protests, and a wave of community mobilisations saying everyone is welcome.
