Performative International: Failure To Advocate For Uniting For Peace

Johannesburg — On November 17th, 2025, Jon Krampner, a subscriber to my Substack, forwarded my then just published article “Why Is ‘Progressive International’ Not Backing Uniting for Peace?” to Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla who is General Coordinator of “Progressive International” (and also Executive Secretary of “The Hague Group”) — identifying himself as a supporter of PI. The groups have been meeting in Amsterdam. Gandikota claimed “The Hague Group is a diplomatic bloc and speaks through its co-chairs; the claim that it has been ‘silent’ [about Uniting for Peace] is simply inaccurate.”

The US Government Sabotaged Genocide Convention Orders Against Israel

A final judgment from the International Court of Justice on South Africa’s Genocide Convention case against Israel could be years away. But that doesn’t mean there can’t be progress in the case before then. In early 2024, South Africa won each of the three rounds of emergency orders that it sought from the Court. The final one, on May 24, 2024, specifically ordered that “Israel must immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah Governorate.” A properly functioning UN Security Council would have implemented the high Court’s orders. It was reported at the time that Algeria, then the sole Arab member of the UNSC, was drafting a resolution to do that.

Global Social Movements Urge Hague Group To Heed Palestinian Civil Society

Friends of the Hague Group (FOTHG), a coalition of major global social movements committed to supporting multilateral efforts to stop the genocide in Palestine and ensuring that such efforts are guided by the demands of organized Palestinian society, has launched a global campaign asking The Hague Group to take decisive action to bring an end to the genocide in Palestine.  In a sign-on letter, FOTHG and major social movement signatories recognize the important policy commitments made by states in the context of The Hague Group, which will hold its third meeting in Amsterdam on March 6-7, 2026.

Growing Global Solidarity To Demand Protection Of Palestinians Manifested On Day Of Action

On November 17, social movements in 13 countries held actions in solidarity with Colombia and its President, Gustavo Petro, who has faced retaliation by the United States for his statements and actions in support of Palestine. Petro has announced that he will introduce a Uniting for Peace resolution at the United Nations General Assembly to create a multinational protection force for Palestinians and impose sanctions and a weapons blockade in order to end the genocide and liberate Palestine from the illegal Israeli occupation. Since he announced his intention to introduce the resolution on September 2, the U.S. government has revoked Petro's visa, targeted him with sanctions, punitively increased tariffs on Colombia, and is even threatening military action against the country.

Global Day Of Action In Solidarity With Colombia On Monday, November 17

Friends of the Hague Group (FOTHG), which launched in July 2025  to support multilateral efforts to end the Israeli genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people and to ensure that all such efforts be grounded in the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, has called for a Global Day of Action in solidarity with Colombia on Monday, November 17. FOTHG's coordinator, Adrienne Pine, explains:  "PNGO [the Palestinian NGO network—the largest collective representation of Palestinian civil society] has demanded that a Uniting for Peace measure be introduced at the UN General Assembly to send a multinational protection force to Palestine and implement sanctions and a military blockade, and President Petro of Colombia has heeded its call by committing to introduce such a resolution.

The UN Is Failing To Protect Palestine Despite Demands To Take Action

Margaret Flowers: You left the United Nations on October 28th of 2023, the same month that Palestinians broke out of Gaza, which has been referred to as the world's largest open-air prison. Can you talk about how that impacted you and your decision to leave the United Nations? Craig Mokhiber: 2023 was a particularly disturbing year for the world and also for me. When this new government took control in Palestine and Israel in the beginning of 2023, it immediately announced that the gloves were off and that the country's policy of incremental genocide that had gone on for decades would be replaced with an expedited form of attacking Palestinians. In the spring, there was a violent upsurge in racially-based attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, including full-scale pogroms in villages like Huwara, by Israeli settlers backed up by Israeli soldiers.
